Tired of "Video Tearing" -- is it the monitor or the video card?

I have a powerful machine, mainly to run Avid and After Effects. So you'd think that I could play a HD QuickTime without much problem. But invariably I get stutters and video tearing when I play these bigger higher resolution files. What would I need to add to my setup to improve the playback of such video files, a better monitor? If so, any suggestions?

YUP, agree with frank, I had the same issue, i tried quicktime, wmp, neither one would play a vid without stutters and tearing. I tried nero, and it plays them perfect, go figure.

Alll 1920x1080. All codecs. AVCHD mts files and QT HD files. Just never been happy with playback in QuickTime or Windows Media Player. VLC does seem to do a much better job at playback.
