TIRED OF THIS!!!

if anyone could suggest anything, I'd appreciate it. I tried getting rid of my pref. files, I tried disk repair permissions... the only thing I haven't done is organize my FCP files because they tend to just go all over the place...nor have I tried reinstalling- but could those be why it crashes on RANDOM actions? when I delete it crashes, when I move something too fast it crashes, when I move a clip to the timeline it crashes. What in the world is going on?

Re: TIRED OF THIS!!!

Two suggestions:
Run Disk Warrior.
If you've got a G4, try not to have RAM installed in the slot nearest the CPU. Also try moving around any cards (PCI, etc.) that you have a spare slot for.
Questions:
What OS -- Panther, Jag, et?
What other apps have you used lately, and are they perfectly stable? (For example, have you tried opening, manipulating, saving/deleting a high res photo in Photoshop? What about a few clips in iMovie?)
How much RAM do you have, and have you tested it?
Have you run the hardware test disk that comes with most Macs?
Is your HD space anywhere near maxed out?
Have you installed any available firmware updates for your Mac?
Have you updated to the latest FCP?
Have you zapped your PRAM and NVRAM?
Are all your cables in good condition?

I've used imovie but haven't used it in a loong while.

don't tell me it's photoshop!

Re: TIRED OF THIS!!!

I'll repeat the things you should still do or answer for yourself:
1. Run Disk Warrior.
2. If you've got a G4, try not to have RAM installed in the slot nearest the CPU. Also try moving around any cards (PCI, etc.) that you have a spare slot for.
3 .Have you run the hardware test disk that comes with most Macs?
4. Is your HD space anywhere near maxed out?
5. Have you installed any available firmware updates for your Mac?
6. Update to the latest FCP : 4.5!!
7. Are all your cables in good condition?

Photoshop: Not saying it causes your problems, only that it's a good test of the hardware and OS because it makes large demands on memory, processor, etc. If it works OK, that's good.

Zap PRAM and NVRAM:

Some system prefs might reset to their defaults after you do this.

Re: TIRED OF THIS!!!

i have twp separate lacie hard drives. both 120GB. i just use one for this one project. and it's down to 27GB. could that be the problem? I'd think that 20GB is still plenty.
and I just realized i already zapped my pram before.. i just didn't know that's what it was called. :)

Re: TIRED OF THIS!!!

I think the rule is to multiply your final FCP file size by 5 to get the HD space you need. If yours is over 4 GB, that might be a problem.

Also see items 1-3, 5-7 in previous message.

Re: TIRED OF THIS!!!

1. Run Disk Warrior.
    I don't have this

2. If you've got a G4, try not to have RAM installed in the slot nearest the CPU. Also try moving around any cards (PCI, etc.) that you have a spare slot for.
i have an imac. I installed one 512 ram in the only one place i can install it to.

3 .Have you run the hardware test disk that comes with most Macs?
i don't think so. how do i do this?

4. Is your HD space anywhere near maxed out?
i meant that I had 2 lacie 120GB as scratch disks for FCP. separated from FCP that is installed into my iMac.

5. Have you installed any available firmware updates for your Mac?
     yes
6. Update to the latest FCP : 4.5!!
I am running on FCP HD
7. Are all your cables in good condition?
     I suppose so.

Re: TIRED OF THIS!!!

Well, I'd suggest the following, in this order:

Remove anything connected to your USB bus, except keyboard & mouse. See if that helps.

Try to find the hardware test CD-ROM that should have come with your Mac. Each one is Mac-specific, so you need the one for that particular iMac. Boot from the CD, let it test your hardware.

Consider buying Disk Warrior, the best Mac repair software made. (www.alsoft.com) Run it immediately, then run it about once a month to avoid problems.

Make sure your Lacie disks are fast enough for FCP. Check the requirements for rotation speed, seek time, etc. Also, are they Firewire 400 or 800? They should be 800. If they don't measure up, try switching scratch disk setting and everything else for FCP to your internal drive. Physically remove external disks from computer. Test to see if problems go away. If so, replace your Lacies with faster ones.

Try taking out your extra RAM and see if any of the symptoms go away. You may have incompatible RAM.

Last resort is a clean install of the OS, then installing FCP and the HD update. Nothing else. See how it works. But I'm guessing one of the above steps will lead you to the problem/solution. The Lacies are my best guess right now.

Re: TIRED OF THIS!!!

thank you. I guess it's no easy fix. as all those fixes are an inconvenience to me. I guess I'd have to wait till I finish all my work in order to do that. thanks again for your help.

Re: TIRED OF THIS!!!

i originally had a pirate copy that would crap out on me. i chipped in with my friend to buy a legal copy after that.
