Tired o waiting on apple.

I read through a lot of old threads on choosing monitors and I still don't know what to do. So I ask for your opinion one more time. hope you can.

I've been waiting on apple to update their cinema displays before I bought two of their 23". I'm learning and slowly getting into the videotaping and editing business. Until now I'v been using my very old DELL E772c 15" monitor ( I was expending on other things first) and its driving me a little crazy now. Also I want to play with COLOR and is just to small, can't read the text at all.

I was going for apple because; don't know much about tech of monitors yet, they are known for making good professional products (expensive I know) and I work on Mac. But I don't see the highly waited display update happening anytime soon.

So, I'm now thinking about buying something good but cheap for now (for sure better than what I have) and maybe adding an apple 23" later..or something else? I'm only working with SD video now but will update soon to HD...hopefully the new pana HMC150.

any suggestion for a good and affordable monitor?
Can they work together with an cinema display?

I hope someone could help.

Cinema Displays are no better than the Dells (or any other quality brand) and cost a whole lot more. Go with a Dell 24".

I was in the same situation as you and I decided to buy the Samsung 24" 2493HM LCD Monitor.
It's pretty amazing and I think it's even better than the Dell. Just think about the 10000:1 Contrast ratio.
It also has a HDMI input so I've been watching Blue Rays in 1080p. NICE!
The price is really good, too.
I've been using it with FCP and it's a joy to use.
 
I use a Dell 2407 24" and an Apple 23" ACD.

The ACD I use with a Matrox MXO for color grading HDV footage.

If you can get an Apple refurb buy one

I'm looking at this Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP 24-inch....it looks like a great option...

any final thoughts?

hey berlinfool, I haven't forget about your recommendation. I was just putting my brain on break from reading so much about monitors.

I took a better look at both the Dell and Samsung. Very similar. I wont mind saving $150 at all. I see the dell has displayport, as I understand is a new, better, faster connector. Do you think is worth the extra $150? I'm not in HD territory yet but I'm trying to get ready for it.

any feed back on this??

I just bought a new Sony Bravia 40" 1080p LCD HDTV at Costco. It's a true 10bit panel with much better contrast than typical computer monitors. (true contrast, not 'dynamic contrast' aka backlight dimming on the fly) It has a PC input, as well as HDMI, component, etc.

It makes a phenomenal computer monitor as well as an incredible 1080p HDTV. And the 10bit color is truly noticeable when you take a look at images with subtle gradients, etc.

The only trouble is you need some space to sit back from it. Invest in a wireless keyboard and mouse because the thing is too big for the typical desk.
 
I don't really know much about the displayport, I just can tell you that I'm very happy with my Samsung. It's almost half price from the Apple display. I'm thinking about getting a second one.

I'm leaning to the Sansung for sure. Will do a bit more research or displayport and make my mind up soon. I need a monitor soooooooooooon.

Hey milleto:
Here's the one thing the Dell is better at: It has a better connectivity.
The Samsung only has RGB, DVI and HDMI connectors while the Dell has more options. That would make sense if you want to connect your camera direcly to the monitor.
Otherwise, if you only use it for your computer or Blue Ray player, it's all you need.
