Tips?

I'm currently saving for a DVX100A...and the only thing I've ever fully shot and edited is on a bottom end DV camera. My main reason for upgrading is the quality of what i shoot is obviously not up to par with the DVX100A and I want to get the best looking footage possible. The only problem is, I have little to no experience with cinematography.

Is it a bad idea for me to save up and outright go out and buy such an expensive camera? Is the learning curve too steep for someone with my experience, or do you think I'll be satisfied with my results? I've edited the shorts I've filmed on my camera with Adobe Premiere. I know a lot of people use Magic Bullet...again, a program I'm not too familiar with. Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated.

A better quality camera = better quality images. It does not equal better cinematography. I could give Joe Blow a Varicam and he would come out with homemovies that were high quality, but they would still suck -

No it is not a bad idea. As long as you realize that having a nicer camera will not instantly make you a better filmmaker. A trained professional can make a great short on a $200 DV camera, but it is because they have expierence. Equipment does matter, don't get me wrong. It is easier to get better images with better gear. But just having the better gear, does not mean that you will get better footage.

My recommendation would be to shoot as much as you can while you're saving up for the DVX. The more you shoot and evaluate you're work the better you'll become. and then when you do have the DVX your images will be that much better. The learning curve is not all that difficult on the DVX.

It is probably worth putting some money into lighting aswell.

Maybe just a set of 3 redheads or something to start with.

3 redheads for a noob? I can't wait to see the kinda tail you get when you reach Diamond Member status.

Actually I've found the blonds to be a bit easier for the noobs. the Redheads are the feisty ones that require more experience.

Got some red highlights, but the AmerInd blood is too dominant. However, I do have the Irish/Scottish background, too, so I have close redheaded ancestors. Of couse, thanks to my heritage I do have one problem ... the Irish taste for spirits and the Indian lack of tolerance ... I can get drunk smelling the cork!! Made for a cheap date when I was single. :cheesy:

HEY!!! WHATS THE MATTER WITH US BRUNETTES??? (Too smart for you guys????)

No, no, Not at all. It's just the advice my uncle gave me when I came of age:

"Date a blonde, marry a brunette."

So I did.

Redheads really rock the house.....trust me I know from experience
