tips to good hand held?

I do love mono pods. Lightweight, compact, cheap, and they aren't an extension of you like the vest rigs or more complex shoulder mounts. Probably your best answer for weddings.

I also love monopods, but especially a tall one that I can fully extend and then hold up above my head, way up there, for shots over crowds. Otherwise, it's great to stabilize things and support the weight when you're standing still, but not any help when you're on the move.

When hand holding, the OIS stabilizes some of the high frequency shake you get as your arms start to quiver. Any shoulder rig will give you more stability, and it's really noticeable as you zoom in more.

The thing I really like about the DVrig is the support pod that goes into the belt pouch. It's spring loaded to absorb walking movement. It's no Steadicam, not by a long shot, but it means that walking doesn't mess you up over it just being a should rig.

So why have it? Even with the counterweight going over your shoulder, the rig is still front heavy, so the support rod takes all that weight from your arms, and puts it on your hips. You don't hold the camera up at all, just aim it. You can even take your hands off the rig! That's the one thing that means I can hold a steady shot, even while walking, for a long time (I did a 45 minute continuous take once), and survive a full day of carrying the camera around, always at the ready.

In the end, there is no ideal thing for all situations. I hand hold, use a monopod, a tripod, the DVrig Pro, and a Steadicam Pilot. Horses for courses.

you could also try using a smaller camera. For example, this video was shot using a phone and there is little to no shaking. So perhaps it has to do with the weight of the camera.

A Tiffen Steadistick is a good, cheap alternative for around $100. Highly recommend it for shooting an odd event here and there. I'd go with a DV Multi Rig type device if you're always doing event shooting though.
