Tips on How to Shoot Time Lapse on an HVX

I haven't received my Barry Green book yet and have an assignment that I need to compress roughly 5 hours of time into 5 minutes or so of footage.

A local installation artist that has a lot of interesting visuals IE. Syringes stuck into a wall and he wants footage of himself setting the whole project up. I am hoping to shoot a few angles of it so I can cut the Time Lapsed footage together to spice it up over the 5 minutes.

Can anyone tell me how to acheive a true Time Lapse on an HVX? And if anyone has any tips for a successful lapse I would appreciate it.

Thanks. Reel Project #1.

you have two options pretty much. you can use the cameras invelometer in video mode or you can used the frame rate hack. i'm too sleepy to do some math right now but either should produce good results.

you will get better results with an SLR digital camera since you can adjust more. Then just compile into a movie from an image sequence in any NLE or compositer or even virtual dub

I you have access to an SLR still camera, that will be the best use of time and equipment.

But if you wanna learn about the HVX and timelapse, it's a fine tool.

Here's what I did to shoot 3 hours of the widest street in the world, Nueve de Julio:

Use 1080 30p mode, and the cameras own Intervalometer. You'll need to set the cam to "Video Cam" from "Film Cam" in the scene file menu. Then you'll get more options it the Recording Setup menu.

In Recording Setup, I changed REC FUNTION NORMAL, to REC FUNTION INTERVAL. And I shot at 1 frame every 5 seconds, which appears as "5s" in the HVX menu.

I'd recommend using a slow-ish shutter speed also. I used 1/15th which made for smoother playback than the regular 1/48th.

good luck!
