Tips for a new documentary producer

Hello, I am producing my first 45 minute documentary film on a Missing Person. I would like some guidance or tips on the best mic to use for off camera interviews and voice over speaking? The camera that I am looking to purchase is the Panasonic AG-DVC20 3CCD.

If anyone has any information on documentary grants, please do share.

Thank you in advance!

Best,
Terri

You have a few options. First, check with some recording studios in your area. Recording studios are a lot cheaper than you may think and the price includes the engineer who will do their magic on your audio. Figure out how long the interviews or voice overs will take and you can figure out how much it would cost you to record in a recording studio.

The other option is to go to your local musical instrument store and test out some mics. You want a mic that produces no line noise. You don't have to use a mic for video cameras or filmmaking to do the off camera audio. I've run a record label and in-home recording studio for longer than I've been making films. I prefer to use my music recordng equipment for my off camera audio.

I use this mic in my recording studio:

Of course you can also use the mic you use for on camera audio as well.

I use an SM58 plugged directly into my mixer, which is fed directly to the Avid.
My voice over booth is now just a small closet/office with proper acoustic foam.

Don't forget the closet with clothes still hanging in it. Used that a number of times on location and works great.
