Timeline Question-

I'm editing a friend's short film and he's sent me all his footage already captured on an external hard drive. He shot with the anamorphic adapter for the DVX.

Each time I drag a clip to the timeline I get the red bar indicating the clip needs to be rendered before I view. This happens each and every time I make a slight alteration to the clip.

Is there a setting I can adjust somewhere to get FCP to not require rendering under these circumstances? I seem to recall when I worked on my own short, that I was able to simply drag clips into the timeline and edit at will without constant red bars showing up.

Help is appreciated-

Timeline Sequence settings are as follow:
720x480 NTSC DV 3:2
Pixel aspect ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601/DV
Anamorphic unchecked
Field Dominanace: lower (even)
Editing timebase: 29.97

Anamorphic is checked on all his clips in the browser bins. When they're unchecked the footage looks squeezed in the viewer window.

Looking at your sequence settings, I'd say you need to change a couple things. For one, it needs to be anamorphic. The footage will be squeezed in the viewer, but once you add items to the timeline, they will look "normal".
Was it shot/imported 24p? You may need to change the sequence to be 23.97 also.

Hopefully the footage was captured correctly, too. If iy was shot with pulldown and not imported with pulldown removal you will have to fix it.

Just some thoughts off the top of my tired head...

Just changed (the existing timeline) setting by clicking the anamorphic box and the clips I've cut together so far now look squeezed in the canvas window.

I unchecked the anamorphic on an individual clip in the browser and dragged it to the timeline with the new anamorphic setting. While the footage now drags and drops without requiring rendering, the frame fills the entire 720x480 canvas window. This is making me nervous. Looks like I'm in danger of the frame getting cut off and cropped rather than looking letterboxed in a 4x3 frame.

Thoughts?

It was shot 24p. The current timeline is 29.97. Doesn't look like that's an issue because just making the anamorphic setting changes you suggested seems to allow me to drag and drop footage without red render bars showing up.

Also, will I be able to save my current cut? Or will I have to drag and drop all the footage again from scratch?

Thanks in advance for the responses-

You may want to create a new sequence at 4x3 and bring some of the footage in there and see how it behaves.
It definitely should be letterboxed on your screen.

Play around with different sequence settings until you find the correct one. You then ought to be able to do a "select all" on your already-edited sequence and drag everything into the new empty sequence without losing your edit.
