Timeline question (24p or 23.976)

I have a project currently in Vegas. It is a 29.97 interlaced project and the video captured to it are also 29.97 interlaced.

I am creating a single 29.97 interlaced AVI output from this to put into an external de-interlace process and will also take it down to 24 fps.

My question is this. I will bring this project back into vegas for finishing. Soundtrack, titles, etc. Is it preferable for me to output this AVI from the outside source as true 24p or drop frame. And is there an advantage to one or the other when I bring this back into Vegas?

My gut tells me that since the project will eventually go to DVD, I should go with 23.976, and edit on a 23.976 timeline in Vegas. But then I think of those film transfers and I am sure Hollywood is not converting 24f film to 23.976 just to go on a DVD transfer (or are they).

Thoughts are appreciated.

You should stay with 23.976.

But that isn't "drop frame" -- 23.976 can have timecode that is either non-drop or drop. When the DVX records 24p, it's non-drop.

Don't confuse the frame rate with the timecode. No actual frames are dropped -- drop-frame timecode is a numerical sequencing tool only.

Thanks for the clear up David. So am I correct in thinking that 23.976 is to deal with the IVTC process?

And drop frame is really only so that 1hr of video actually comes up as 1hr on the machines...
