timeline playback hangs in FCE4

When editing high-def footage from my Canon HX A1 in FCE4 the timeline keeps hanging on playback. I am suspecting it is because I need to put my captured footage on a scratch disk that is different from my one and only hard drive on the G5 which contains my operating system, etc. I've tried the suggestions on the prompt (to lower the bandwidth regarding RT playback, etc) but still it hangs. I have a Mac G5 2.3 and I would think 2.3 is fast enough to handle HDV. I upgraded my RAM from 1 gig to 3 gigs but still it hangs.

Any suggestions for getting my timeline to play until I install the FirewireVR external hard drive that I just ordered? (hope that helps!)

Not sure.
Hmm.

you definitely don't want it on your system drive. Are you sure your sequence settings match?

Also make sure you don't have any overlapping windows or your canvas window is set to something other than fit to window... can't have any scroll bars in the canvas window.

Thanks, Cap. I will try your suggestions tonite when I get back home. As far as getting sequence settings to match, I'm not quite sure what you mean. When I go to Final Cut Preferences there are system settings there. And on the timeline there is a popup for some settings there. Is that what I should pay attention to -- making any of those settings the same?

Is there any where else I should look for sequence settings?
