Timecode?

Hi all!

I've been looking more and more into timecode (I recently lost out on mixing/recording for a feature because I didn't have timecode equipment). But, I am having a difficult time really understanding how all of the pieces fit together when it comes to timecode. How does the slate interface with the recorder wth the camera, etc.

Can anyone point me to a site or a book that can give me the basics? Or provide a nice explanation here?

Thanks in advance!

Phil

Relatively simple. The TC device/recorder jams the slate to match (this most be repeated several times a day as the crystal in both can have slightly different timing). The camera records the starting TC frame which is then typed in at the start of each take at the telecine house which then goes to that TC position on your audio tape or DVD data disc. They record together for sync sound. Additional tracks can be sunk up later in post as needed (this is why good sound notes and organization are so key).
