timecode break adds to In/Out Duration

30 min Betacam tapes, Logging 10 minute clips/sections with time of day timecode breaks. I've read the forums extensively. I'm OK with FCP automatically creating new IN/OUT points as set in preferences. The bug is this...Since there are breaks in TC and the time on tape jumps forward, the duration of the original IN/OUT points jump to over an hour, although total length of tape is only 30 mins. How will FCP handle this additional time in Batch Capture. Will it get to the end and crash or freeze as it looks for this additional duration? How will it finish or finalize the last digitized section of tape? Thanks in advance for help.

In all honesty, if you (or your team) has decided to shoot Free Run mode, then you should do a more intense job of logging it. Even if you're going to be bringing in all the footage anyway. I would sit down and log it more detailed and then log around the inherhent timecode breaks.

The points you addressed in your original message are the exact reasons I would want to do a better job with the logging in the first place. FCP isn't likely to play the nicest with clips that are apparently multiple hours in length. It won't error out saying that "hey you can't have a tape that long." It will let you log and attempt to digitize those clips. But when digitizing, in having to calculate the new timecodes on the breaks, well it could be some real "fun" for you there.

Sure it might take up a lot more time now to log it properly, but it will be well worth it. If you have drive crashes and have to re-digitize things, simply digitizing it in the first place, just in general it will be a superior workflow for you. Assume everything will go wrong, plan around that, and then you'll protect yourself a whole lot better.

cheers.
