Timecode Affect Look?

Hi. I couldn't find a clear answer to this in earlier questions, though it seems somewhat simple. Will editing footage shot in 24p or 24pa in a 29.97 timecode in FCP affect the final look? Would it be better to edit this footage in a 24 fps timeline, or can I edit in a 29.97 fps timeline and have it come out looking the same? I ask because I have to render everything I put into a 24 fps timeline, and I don't want to take up all that space if it doesn't make a difference what kind of timeline I use. Thanks!

24p (non advanced) is technically printed to tape at 29.97 (essentially the camera is doing a pull which is sampling the fields from the progressive frames inside the camera so the end product has the progressive look, but the footage is compatible with the interlaced timeline) - so you can capture it and edit it in a 29.97 timeline natively. When digitizing 24pa into fcp, digitize with advanced pull, edit in a 24p timeline.

Thats pretty much the best way to do it - doing it otherwise may/will cause problems.

24p (regular 24p) is meant to be edited in a 29.97 timeline. It will look basically like 24p footage (i.e., film) which has had pulldown added to be broadcast on TV.

24pa (so called "advanced") is meant to be edited in a 23.98 timeline. But you need to capture it as 29.97. See the sticky at the top of this section.

If you do not remove the pulldown of the 24pa footage and edit on a 29.97 timeline, you will get a "stuttery" look to the footage, as it has a 2:3:3:2 cadence, and not a 2:3:2:3 cadence.

there is another thing to consider when choosing your format. if you edit 24p at 29.97, it will have the same basic 24p look until you apply transitions, etc. transitions and motion based effects happen at 29.97fps and have a different look than when editing at true 24p. at least i can see the difference....

What kind of difference is this? And is there a way fix it? Is there a special way to go about slow motion, for example?

So I'm editing 24p normal in a 29.97 timeline. If I do slow motion on the clip, the clip speed sorta speeds up and down. Is there a way to fix this, and make the speed of the slow motion constant?
