It seems to me that as it stands today, digital SLR's are far closer to what we would like to see in a low cost digital movie camera than what the camcorder manufacturers are likely to provide any time soon. For $1000 we can get a 6megapixel chip that is the same size as 35mm motion picture film, same focal lengths dof etc. Real lenses, iris, glass etc. One sensor so no chromatic aboration from prism, should be able to make adaptors for cinema lenses. They are even including low res movie modes now. The limitation is storage speed and data through put. with P2 and like high speed, high capacity storage on its way real time full frame can't be far behind. You know that if 24fps full res was available papparazzi, would take it, and we could use it.

If you are an animator, or do time lapse it is already ideal. Maybe someone could frankenstein a nikon d70 for realtime output to hd-rack or some such set-up.

They put nikon lenses on movie cameras, why not zeiss superspeeds on the nikon.

Why do we expect companies that make news cameras and home movie machines to be the gods of digital movie making. Start with good pictures and get more faster.

Just to be clear... I don't know of any $1k, 6megapixel camera that is full-frame 35mm.
Canon just released the 5D that is 12.8 megapixel full-frame and will probably retail for around $3k.

Well, my nikon was a $5,000 camera in it's day, as is its successor the D2X (I have the D1X). I think the new Canon is $7,000. Then if you really want resolution, look at the digital Medium Format cameras at 20+ megapixels. Of course they cost about $15,000 and up... Sub $1K????

you know what though, I actually did an animation few years ago for college work using a Sony 2.3 (something) meg digital camera. Captured it frame by frame and just pasted in FCP, play it, and be amazed! it worked!

they are the size of a 35mm movie frame, see current American cinematographer.

dop - are you talking about just a 6 megapixel sensor for $1k or are you talking about a 6 megapixel DSLR? If so, which model? Because as I stated above, I know of NO 6 megapixel camera that has a 35mm x 23mm (35mm film size) sensor.
Even Nikon's D2X is only 23.7 x 15.7mm.

The new canon 5d is full frame - but it's 12.8 megapixel - NOT 6, and it's no where near $1k. More like $3k by the time it hits the shelves.
