Time Freeze Effect Help - Matting/Rotoscoping?

I KNOW THERE ARE OTHER THREADS ABOUT THIS

I searched and read through the other threads about time freezing and didn't find what I was looking for. What I need to create is similar to the effect done with pausing in Click and Clockstopers. It is for a short I have just written and I need to figure out how to do it. I have read of things in the other threads such as rotoscoping or something, and matting but I am not familiar with what these methods are. If someone could clarify this for me that would be great. By the way I have AE7 and Premier 2.0

all help is greatly appreciated. It isn't going to be filmed for some time but I thought sooner rather than later I need to figure out how I'm going to do it. Thanks again

:)

The basic of it is that you film two plates of the same shot and then you apply a mask to get rid of whatever you don't want. After Effect would do this. A recent example is that On the Lot film where the clothes hanger are tossed up and becomg frozen in the air while people walk around in the background.

They probably did it in two shots, first one where they throw the hangers up and another from the same angle with people walking around. Then the two shots are laid on top of each other and a mask is drawn on the top track and animated (keyframed) so that you get one complete shot. That's the gist of it. Complicated to explain but it's a simple, although time-consuming process. Fire up AE and give it a shot, use the Pen tool to create the mask.

If you paid close attention, the camera didn't move. There was only a few static shots when that effect occurred. If the camera had move, it would have required complicated motion tracking which would be very difficult to do in the time frame they had.
