Time code breaks at beginning of capture. Help.

Hey guys,

If this has been discussed alreqady, feel free to direct me to that post. I am having trouble capturing from my DVX to FCP. When I start capturing in either "Capture NOW" or "batch", FCP freezes on the first frame to be captured and my mac thinks for a while. Then it pops up with "dropped frames detected...etc." Sometimes it works when I try to capture a logged clip that is very short. Any ideas on this? I heard that there is a plugin that is supposed to fix this kind of thing becuase Panasonic is known to have these kind of problems with FCP. Also, should I be FF and rewinding every tape before shooting. My DP does sometimes, but we have unfortunately not been consistent as I figured it was not that important. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Wehn shooting try runnign a few seconds before the key action starts (slating, etc) If you're batch capturing from logs then start the logs a couple of seconds from camera start.
Use the Check Rec button if necessary to make avoid timecode breaking.

Scott,

That is good advice, but my particular problem has nothing to do with actual timecode breaks in the tape. The sections I have been trying to capture are in the middle of live concert footage where the camera has been running for awhile. What happens is that the first frame comes up for capture and FCP freezes. The tape, however, keeps running. The computer processes for a while and then the window pops up saying there has been a timecode break. This would definitely cause there to be a break in timecode, even though it is not there on the tape. I guess my question is, why is FCP freezing on the first frame when I try to capture?

Are you capturing to a firewire drive or have a slow computer? Firewire drives aren't officially approved by Appel to capture to. The problem is your data is going in and then back out again using the same port (even if it's a different socket) It will run at the slowest of the devices connected (camera, drive, etc) This or a slow computer (or other programs runnign) could cause the first few frames to be 'long' (lasting longer than they should since the computer can't keep up. At that point it would assume it's not in sync.

Since you're capturing irectly from the DVX you should get good timecode.

scott,

I am using a 837 mhz G4. Internal ATA drive. It seems like if the logged clip is longer than 5 min it will freeze, if it is under it often works. Any idea why this is happening? I used to be able to capture large chunks of video. Thanks.

Make sure you have plenty of disk space to work with. The system needs 1-2 Gigs just for itself. If you do a cpature now FCP allocates a large block. Turn off any other programs or system enhancements.
Post a note to 2-pop.com since they have more FCP people there.
