Tilting

One of the toughest shots I have is tilting. It would help to have a better head, but no resistance is the reality for us. Does anyone have a trick to smoothly tilting from high to low and back with consistent motion?

Maybe an arm extension on the tripod? I think I'll try that. On most days I'm fine, but with HD it's imperative to have slow, steady tilts.

Our heads are fluid, just not beefy enough. I guess the reality is that it's gear and not skill. I would like to know about the rubber band thing though.

I also use a 'Zaza' slider, and it's tricky to get a mechanically smooth slide where I absolutely can't detect speed variance in post.

HA! That's awesome. I'm glad I humbled myself to ask such a silly question. I got a silly answer, but a brilliant one. Blessings...

You can also use a cotton/soft hand towel, it works just as well and is a little more controllable. Rubber bands (even on good fluid heads) tend to make you overshoot your target, and then bounce back a pinch as you release pressure. I have some pretty good fluid heads, (sachtler, Oconnor etc) but am not blessed the steady hands of a surgeon or explosives expert :-) Rubber bands or a hand towel/rag are part of my field kit.

P.S. Learned something new the other day: Most Bogen/Manfrotto heads are actually not fluid heads by definition, but rather greased friction heads,... and, Sachtler fluid heads are not fluid at all, (according to the shop I went to to have mine looked at) they are totally mechanical?!! Wow?! If you have ever used one, then you'll understand how cool that is. You would never know it?!
