Tilt Shift Videos = COOL

The focus is shifted when the lens is tilted....

I wonder if anyone has used a"lensbaby" on their 35mm adapter yet?

I used one when I AC'd on a RED music video shoot. That was about the most fun I've had ACing. It really works like a 2nd focal plane of glass that can be tilted on X/Y axis. At first it was a little frustrating figuring out how to make the part of the image that I wanted to be in focus.

For a little extra fun, hook up a vibrator to a lensbaby...looks pretty crazy.

And I KG'd on another one that used the lensbaby and RED... http://www.mtv.com/videos/famine/315063/consume-devour-repeat.jhtml

Nice effect. Do you think compositing a graduated gaussian blur over top of video works nearly as well as using a tilt shift to record in the first place?

Loki - I liked it, but seemed to me like only certain shots benefited from the tilt and shift.

A Blur won't quite give the same effect. Check out some of the shapes of the lens flares on the preceeding clips.

You can do it in After Effects as well with a similar technique that you use in photoshop
Create a black and white ramp/Gradient in photoshop (use the gradient that looks like a horizontal cylinder) and bring it into AE, apply the lens blur effect to your footage in AE and set your ramp layer as the effect's "depth map"

Tweak the lens blur settings to where you want them, then apply an "S" curve to mess with the contrast and make the colours seem like they've been painted in :)

You can re-use the gradient image over and over again if you want to do multiple clips quickly

... or you could just use the tilt-shift lens effect in Magic Bullet Looks
