Tiger/QT7: check bug reports before upgrade

Just a caution that some serious problems with Quicktime 7 Pro, a required upgrade for Tiger, are being reported on the Apple discussions board. There are other Tiger issues reported as well, but this one could seriously affect workflow for some of us. (If you're going ahead with it anyway, there's a good pre-install checklist at macfixit.com)

Yeah, I've heard about a month ago that Jobs gave the okay to release it. That it still had bugs, but they'll send out updates.

My friend told me that she was going to buy it tonight or might have ordered online already for $99. That she wasn't going to install it until the first update is released.

Gary, I'd say to wait until you've read posts about the update....see how many problems that's causing people.

I also think FCP needs a lot of stuff in the OS to work right, so there's a lot that can go wrong...it's not like running Appleworks. Sort of a 747 vs. a Piper Cub in complexity.

It is always better to wait a few days before loading an upgrade. I can't wait to have QT 7 for the H.264 codec however, it is way better than MPEG4 standard.

We have to buy a new pro key for QT 7 also, to have the full advantage like the new H.264.

I found it the hard way that if you have QT Pro in 6 it's gone in 7 and you need to buy again. That kinda sucks. I'm happy to pay for H264 encoding, but I'd at least like to be able to export video in the codecs I could in 6 or have gotten a warning I was about to lose that capability.

I've upgraded and so far everything is working fine. QT 7 Pro is running smoothly, and h.264 looks really good...

I'll let anyone know if anything crazy happens.

Cool Josh, same here. I couldn't wait. Its the coolest upgrade I've seen so far. I DID back up everything first, just in case.

Josh & PPT: You upgraded to Tiger? Have you tried running FCP, Soundtrack, Compressor, etc? That's what I'm the most concerned about.

Yeah I'm like pptphoto, I couldn't wait either... like a kid on Christmas eve :)

I haven't done anything really serious yet in FCP, but yeah, everything seems to be working just fine. I did a clean install of Tiger (nerd alert: I like that clean, sparkly feeling of a new OS = not really necessary = if it was, I'd be on a windows box), and I've opened up and tested everything, and all is well (including Adobe CS, After Effects, Dreamweaver, etc.)

I too did a Carbon Copy Clone of my entire hard drive before upgrading, just to be safe. I really, really like this version. Apple's little OS has grown up. :)

He, he. Almost, eh?

bombich.com makes a Carbon Copy Cloner tool that really helps relieve a lot of the anxiety. On the whole, your probably the smarter one in waiting. Who knows what I'll do if my machine starts spewing acid in my face after asking it to render some color correction?

I'll make sure to note it here.

FCP seems to work here, too, but I haven't done anything heavy-duty yet, either. FWIW, I didn't do a clean install (because I'm lazy, and because this isn't Windows!).

I know it's a little off-topic, but if you have QuickTime 7, you can bring your computer to its knees with some 720p and 1080p (!!) QuickTime movie trailers here:

My poor PowerBook G4 skips too many frames to play them smoothly, but the image quality is frightening. :)

Damn, my life is on hold while I play with my new Tiger. I love it. Everything seems to work fine so far. Nothing heavy here yet either, but I did open and check everything. Had an unimportant project on FCP that works still, and composed a little shortie in SoundTrack just to check. Its all working fine so far. I even got QT Pro on both boxes. Had to buy it again twice! Hooked the DVX up to it and it records straight into H.264. Didn't even have to take the camera off pause!!! Just click on the record button in QT and it records while the cameras in pause. SpotLight is incredible, and so is Automator. I had to use a box last week with XP on it. OMG what a joke. I felt like I had to disinfect after using it. The OS gap has definitely widened! Have fun....

I have to admit that someone on the Apple discussion bds asked anyone with good install experiences to post to a thread. Got lots and lots of encouraging replies.

When my home Mac was for play and occasional work, I would have upgraded in an instant. But now that I'm self employed....and all my big projects are on this machine...and it works fine... and I'm screwed if anything happens to them or there's a big glitch in my workflow....well, I ask myself "What's the worst that can happen if I DON'T upgrade?" Nothing.

But still, that Tiger is one pretty cat!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, eh? Just back up those important files (don't want to be pedantic, but all too many folks forget about backups).
