Tiffen ND filters

I need to buy a .6 ND 4x4 glass filter and don't have a lot of cash right now. While I'd love to get a Schneider, I found a good deal on a Tiffen glass 4x4. Has anyone used these filters? I want to make sure the quality is good and I have used Tiffen in the past with no problems. I made the mistake one time of buying a polyester ND filter and that got scratched up really fast so glass is it.

Thanks

Re: Tiffen ND filters

I use a Tiffen UV filter. I haven't noticed any problems. Never tried their ND filters, so I can't comment.

Re: Tiffen ND filters

i have a Tiffen 4x4 ND .3 and .6. They're good glass for the price. I got them for about $115 from B&H. i need a .9 now to complete the set. it's nice to have a full set, it gives you great control when combined with the in-camera ND's.

Re: Tiffen ND filters

Doesn't the in camera ND's shut down the light enough? .. why would one need to buy glass NDs?

Re: Tiffen ND filters

Disjecta, I have Tiffen NDs, they work great, but if your going to buy NDs consider getting graduated NDs, you won't be sorry.

Re: Tiffen ND filters

Mad Doug, do you have the tiffen grad NDs? Which do you have? Satisfied with them?

Re: Tiffen ND filters

Hey Disjecta,

Tiffen is BEAUTIFUL. I mean, I've used it for 16mm film it was teh 1/4 tobacco or coral, I forget. But it was so chess.

Anyway, I might purchase a set (met some guy from Tiffen and he might put a set together to do 'tests' with). I will most definately share with you should this occur ;D.

Re: Tiffen ND filters

BTW I ordered the formatt and the standard 72 ring. I was told I can't have the tray in closed/locked position. That i would have to be using it open.... is it dangerous for the filter to just slide out in a running shot or something. I know tape will work (camera tape will help things from being sticky) but I didn't spend 300+ to use camera tape....

Any pointers, don't want to break my Tiffens.. :P

Re: Tiffen ND filters

I don't generally use the mattebox and filters (unless they are screw-ons) in a run and gun situation, seems a little cumbersome. I just strip the camera down to it's bare bones and shoot that way.

The "kit" goes on when tripod mounted or handheld within a predictable environment - in other words, not unexpected jerking movement.

Re: Tiffen ND filters

enterdcable,
The filters won't fall out if the lid is open on the formatte box.. there are thumbscrews that hold the filters in each slot. The lid just blocks some stray light from entering.

Re: Tiffen ND filters

does anyone know of any threaded ND grads? it seems they only come in 3X3 or 4X4 square filters for matte boxes. it would be nice to see a threaded nd grad that was on a rotating collar like a circular polarizer.

Re: Tiffen ND filters

Grad ND's aren't threaded because they need room to slide up and down to be able to "place" the horizon.
