Tiffen Filters

When purchasing a filter for the DVX will any of the Tiffen 72mm filters work? I've seen different packages some claiming for photography others for DV, etc. Is the 72mm the only thing that I need to be concerned?

I'm getting a UV filter, and am on the fence about any others. Is it just as easy to change the look of a film with Magic Bullet than to buy a bunch of filters?

Thanks.

Re: Tiffen Filters

also, there is a dvd available on here somewhere that shows a lot of filters so you can actually see what they look like without spending a bunch of money and then being surprised.

i got it and it helped me figure out which looks i really liked and which ones i could pass on.

Re: Tiffen Filters

Verde,

72mm is a standard filter size made by many manufacturers. So any standard 72mm filter will screw into the front of your DVX100/100A.

If you go to the "latest DVX news/articles" section of this website and look under the "DVX Filter Test DVD available...." post by Jarrad Land, you will find more info. There is also info on the Schneider Optics and Formatt websites about filters. What you need depends on what you will be shooting.

Which filters are appropriate for and beneficial in video applications is a different matter.

Re: Tiffen Filters

Hi,
I think we should become more photographers & less video chair plug in jockeys. The way to be a great photographer is to test your tools & know how they react to light. If you made a slip-up, then tune it in post. Too many video folks create stuff in post when they could do a much better / artistic job with a camera and some practical knowledge of light & a box of glass.

It's like photoshop ... filter only if you can't shoot it that way.

Pol. = Adjusted reflections
ND's = helps to get a shallow depth of field
ND grad = control skies, darken earth, use both for a cool effect
LoCon & UltraCon = flashed shadows & cool look
Enhancer = Dashing Reds
Softies = takes the edge off (don't be afraid of soft)
Colors = enhances the mood
Coral or 85's = if you shoot with the daylight preset, you are not getting the best color from the CCD's
the list goes on & on ...

Stack for creative effects. Be bold & take a risk.

Learn your craft.

Agreed, Birdboy, knowledge above gadgets. Except when the gadgets save you hundreds of $$. I believe that is one of the great things about the DV revolution is that we can do things new ways and break the molds.

As for my posting this issue...it is to make sure I have the basics since I'm purchasing everything right now. I do not want to waste money on tools that I will not/do not need.

BTW: I ordered the filter test dvd. That should answer some of my questions.
