Three Monitor Setup for Postproduction?

Regarding postproduction: I have a Dell PC monitor and a good Sony NTSC broadcast monitor. I will be using Vegas 6.0. Does anyone use three monitors for post work? I was considering a flat screen to complement my system, but is that overkill? I see Gary (the 5 dvd Vegas tutorial is excellent) has a three monitor setup. I can't afford (right now) the monitor you have Gary, but perhaps someone can steer me toward an affordable flat screen--keeping in mind I have a broadcast standard Sony already in my two monitor setup.

P.S. I also ordered the Architect 3.0 dvd and am looking forward to it.

Maybe you need to clarify what monitors you are referring to.
Do you mean using two computer monitors, and one broadcast VIDEO monitor?
I'd say that is probably a very common way to work, as it gives excellent flexibility.

Also with "FLAT SCREEN" do you mean LCD or a flat screen CRT? If you mean LCDs, Samsung are very good, but there's MANY out there that are also. Budget will be a HUGE issue here.

i use a 3 CRT computer monitor, and 1 NTSC video monitor(TV) setup. 4 screens in all. but yeah.. not sure what you mean. you should only need one calibrated NTSC video monitor. and the # of computer monitors pends how much desktop space you like having..

Yes, I have a NTSC broadcast monitor (Sony PVM 14L1) and I have a bulky CRT PC monitor (Dell M992). I was considering a flat screen to complement my setup, but haven't thought about whether it should be a flat screen CRT or flat screen LCD. I do know that if I go with three screens, the new monitor has to be a flat screen because of space issues.
I also haven't thought about whether it will be visually annoying or not to mix 'n match. Would you suggest a flat screen CRT or LCD?

Hey dale001,
the size difference (the volume of the whole thing) between a flat screen CRT and a non-flat screen CRT is negligible.
The non-flat screen CRT just has a more 'curved' screen surface; to understand what I mean just try and remember what the 1950s TV looked like! They BULGED! ;-)

So, if you are asking whether you can mix an LCD with a CRT standing next to it, yeah that's a good question. Not sure if I'd like that too much, although I'm pretty sure one could get used to it. Maybe align the two monitors (LCD and CRT) in a similar way, at last make sure that their actual screen surface is the same distance from your viewing position. That coupled with trying to get the two screens of similar size should work out okay I guess.

Thanks for the replies. My M992 is a flat CRT so perhaps it wouldn't be too jarring. I was more concerned about how color would be produced between the CRT and LCD. I guess that wouldn't be too bad assuming I tweak them both similarly.

Just to throw in a monkeywrench... What about a DELL UltraSharp 1905FP 19-inch Flat Panel LCD Monitor or how 'bout a Magnavox 15-inch LCD HDTV monitor?
I guess as long as you have a NTSC broadcast reference monitor as part of your system, the other monitors you decide to use are important, but not quite as...
