Thoughts on Anton Bauer Stasis?

I've done a search on here for the Stasis, and not much has come up. Is anybody out there using this? How does it work with the HVX200? I heard that the weight of the camera might be too heavy for the TrimPac 14 battery to balance it properly. Should I get the Pro Kit with the Battery, Light, Charger, etc? Is there a better alternative to the Stasis? My goal is to have a should-mounted system, where I can keep both of my hands on the camera.

Thanks
Mike

I've heard some good things about the Stasis--really optimal balance...but I've yet to try it myself. I'm also interested in getting some user reports...

Yeah, they are kinda hard to come by (talking about user reports). I guess I will have to bite the bullet and just get one.

look into the spiderbrace it dont have anton bauer capabillity but its light, comfortable and easy to use with two hands.

Also worth checking out is the DVrig pro.

The spiderbrace is a REAL nice system for ultra-lightness, speed, low price, and agility. But attaching all sorts of accessories might be a bit much for it.

Here's a pic of a DVrig pro, with DVX, and stuff:

Hi Vidled,

This is a very impresive set up, Can I put it on the DVTEC site?

With all this weight, I am sure you are using the shock absorbing support pod.

Is it a Rycote fur on the mic.? What mic do you have there?

Danny.

Hey Danny,
yeah, that picture was taken outside the post office on Mangareva Island, French Polynesia. I put the rig down to make a phone call, and then took that photo. So I am still wearing the belt and pod which is why it's not in the picture.

The fur IS a Rycote, covering a Baby Ball gag, covering an Oktava Mk-012 mic. There's also an Audio Technica wireless receiver with a Sound Devices Mix Pre and a Lithium Polymer battery pack running two LED lights (on an NRG Tri Mount).
Oh, and a Zoe DVX Zoom Lens Controller on the right handle.

I can send a larger image if you want.

THANKS for a GREAT product; it ended up being my most used way of shooting; I also had a tripod, and Glidecam V-16 with me, but the V-16 was of course a little more complex to set-up ;-).

Cheers.

ADDED: There's also some Sennheiser PX100 foldable headphones on the rig.

We just used two DV Rig Pros for a sitcom pilot we shot last week. The entire show was handheld and the DV Rig Pro rocked, it is a great product. I will post some snaps of our setup this weekend. The belt and pogo stick really help out with balance and fatigue, our DP and camera op shot all day with this setup with the HVX-200s and were quite happy with the results.

Great product! Forget about the Anton Bauer Stasis, it costs more and isn't as good.

Dan

Thanks Dan,

Pls. start a new thread for your photos - "DvRigPro. crazy setups" ?

I want more setups and prod. shoots for the site.

Danny.

One of the main reasons I liked the Stasis was the simplicity of the whole thing. I am only wanting to add "shoulder-mounting" to my HVX (for steadier shots, and less arm fatigue). I want to keep my hands on the camera at all times. I don't want extra handles like the dvcrigpro has. I definetly don't want to have to wear a belt with stabalizer rods, etc. I want simple. And I like to have my hands on the camera at all times. I'm looking for simplicity. Maybe I am naeve. I don't know. So given these factors, am I heading in the right direction by looking at the Stasis? Or do you think I have my priorities messed up, and I should be looking for other features (basically telling me that I think I know what I want, but I really don't know what I want). No place in Central FL stocks these products, so I can't test/compare them.

Thanks for all the input thus far...

As much as I like the idea of having a compact system, the Stasis just doesn't work that great. I found it uncomfortable. It certainly will not work great with the HVX200 because of the weight. You will not be able to use the Stasis hands free. As for the DVrig Pro, you don't have to use the stabilizer bar, but it certainly helps. The best way to make your decision is to go and try it out.

MrPolarBare,

What is your major shooting style, Viewfinder or LCD ?

Danny.
Viewfinder.

Bgundu - Yeah, I figured that. Hopefully I can find a demo day or something, since no stores around here stock these products. I am kindof an impulse buyer so it is hard for me to hold back :)

Thanks for all the input everyone.

If you prefer the viewfinder, try a one-handed Image 2000 (you can remove the hand grip as well). Birns & Sawyer builds 'em and I think it will save you some money and be more comfortable than the Stasis. You'll want to try it before you buy, to make sure the distance is correct.

I'm not against the idea of the Stasis, it was just the poorest execution I've ever seen for a shoulder support priced above $19.95. Personally, I'd rather operate a DV cam w/a monopod than a Stasis.

We have a stasis that we're using with the HVX. We bought it without trying it and I guess it is a little awkward. It's definitely not great out of the box. It's a little front heavy.

That having been said, I have some mods in mind that I think will make it quite nice. The "system" is pretty cool. I just feel like I want the HVX closer to me, so I'll probably cut it a little shorter. I also want the camera over a little more for the viewfinder. And of course, it needs more padding.

I guess I'm saying that I think it's an alright system if your willing to trick it out a little.

David
