Those of you with dollys have to see this...

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

That dolly must have cost a lot of money. Just look at the sophisticated design...

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

It's funny how so much of this stuff seems obvious after it is explained t you. I agree with their statement about the computer modeling. Without actors, you do see how the camera work creates tension and mood.

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

The sample clips are certainly intriguing. Shows how camera movement/placement can alter the tone [especially as the 3D characters have no facial expressions] Been flirting with getting this for awhile but @ $480 it's just too pricy. Half that and I might bite.

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

If I had the cash, It would be on it's way. I've watched the slow push clip 3 times. This thing is worth it's weight in gold. It's absolutely next on my list of things to buy.

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

Ya, I have all 3 clips on my drive. They look really good. ... I just have too big a "want" list...  :(

To bad you can't get one series at a time.

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

I found a discount code that will give you 20% off...  Should bring the price down to $390.  UFVA2123 it presumably works until sometime in May 1, 2005.

It would be cool if someone bought it and viewed it, and sold it for 20% less used, and then that person did the same, until I can buy it for $50 and keep it. ;-)

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

that was really cool
but 470$ does seem pricy... i'd rather spend that on a mini35 :)

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

I just ordered it for $395 including shipping. Just use the coupon code above.

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

I recently aquired this set of DVD's and I admit; it is well worth it. Wow. The instruction and level of detail is amazing. I'd get this over film school anyday (For those contemplating). As mentioned above; there are so many lessons and instruction that once explained and shown to you, you say "Duh! OMG! Yes!".

I'm only on DISC 3 and it is still all sinking in. In closing? Get this DVD set. Wow. A Great product and better than any film school IMHO.

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

Hmm,. even after watching the clips $500 (after tax) just seemed rediculous.

But if John Hudson says its worth it i'm going to have to reconsider... Well not for $500 in any case, but if i found it for $300 i think i'd snatch it up i think (which i wouldn't before)

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

If anyone else is interested, I may be up for the same deal.

Re: Those of you with dollys have to see this...

Okay, I won't go into a piracy lecture, there's something weighing more heavily on my mind in this thread.

I'm always a little taken aback when I see someone thinking that a valuable learning tool is expensive. 5oo dollars is a pittance compared to what you would learn on these DVDs. I understand someone who currently doesn't have the money (like myself), but how much would an afternoon, or a weekend with a professional cinematographer be worth? Thousands? Tens of thousands? It is not now, nor is it ever about price. It is about value. Value is what you get versus what it costs. If you wanted to be a doctor, you would have no choice but to pay the untold thousands of dollars for medical school. You would do it because, if you worked hard, and did what you were supposed to, you would be a doctor. Yet there are those of us who feel that type of rule doesn't apply to filmmaking. It is a discipline, a craft, a trade. True, technology has levelled the playing field and made it possible for many of us to pursue this dream tha may not have been able to before. But that doesn't change the fact that to be good at this (or anything) you need to learn how to do it. The downside of this technological revolution is that much of the apprenticeship has been removed. Everybody thinks they can make a good movie because they saw El Mariachi. Knowledge is power, the saying goes. Not power over others, but power over your destiny. If 5 Ben Frankilins is too much ask to learn nearly everything you need to know to be an effective storyteller with a camera...it makes me wonder.

Sorry, stepping off the soapbox now.
