Those Ebay cranes...

Re: Those Ebay cranes...

I've used one that looks identical, works well. The short arm is great inside a house (tight quarters). Jibs will significantly take your shots to the next level.

It's not the most robust design but it's well worth the dough.

Cool. Think this will be my next purchase.

Re: Those Ebay cranes...

You would be hard pressed to DIY for that price. Looks like a hell of a deal. I would like to see some closer pixs

Keep us posted if you get one.

Re: Those Ebay cranes...

I've been looking at that one aswell for the last month or so, swaying back and forth about building one of just buying that. For the price vs. time to build I'd say that one is a great deal, and like 10s said it'll bring the footage to the next level. They should've had one in film school , cheap bastards.

Re: Those Ebay cranes...

I bought a crane from this seller on ebay, but not this model. If yours is designed and manufactured anything like the one I got, my advice is look elsewhere. I opted for the cableless version which also sits on your existing tripod.
There are no real bearing surfaces, just nuts, bolts, and washers at all pivot points. The unit is completely covered in cheap black paint that has flaked off in several places. While assembling the arm and mounting my cam I found this paint in the threaded holes as well.
If I buy another it will be more of a pro model from a well known maker and have its own base. Better yet, I'd build a better one by improving on this design and build.

Re: Those Ebay cranes...

Anyone have an opinion on the Sunpack sticks / 75mm bowl "fluid head" set-up these guys are peddling?

I'm looking for a low cost 2nd head for my CamSled to go on a hi-hat. Looks like no drag controls...

The sticks and bowl - if they're not subject to collapse - don't look half bad.

Re: Those Ebay cranes...

this looks a LOT like a skycrane jr.

i hate to say it but this one on ebay almost seems too cheap.

i have the skycrane jr. and i love it.

btw, i just had bob at skycrane modify my jr. to be used as a 4 foot jib, you only use 1 of the 4 foot sections, it has a second fulcrum added and you just use a shorter cable and move the pully from the other section and put it on the single section.

just got it, should be great for using indoors on a dolly.

I second that.

more comment on this in the future.

If are willing to invest in a good crane, make that decision and don't be afraid to buy quality and put in the practice time.

Re: Those Ebay cranes...

Does anyone know if this will break down into smaller sections. lets say for use in a room or something.

Re: Those Ebay cranes...

You could still go the DIY route. I bought that book from http://www.dvcamerarigs.com and it has 3 cranes in it, including one you can break down. I've literally been out of town since I got the book, so I haven't had a chance to build anything yet. But it appears to be very thorough. I'm going to do the car mount before tackling a crane, though. ;D

Re: Those Ebay cranes...

I've been looking at the site for months now, alway's to cheap to fork out the extra cash, but I'm really getting interested in building a quality rig, and I' think that the extra few bucks will probably make everything go so much more smoothly.

Re: Those Ebay cranes...

HOw ironic......I actually bought that exact one. Its decent but not as sturdy as you might think. I think the money is in buying the right tripod for it because trust me....your going to need a HEAVY DUTY! it tends to be lopsided and mine even collapsed a couple of times.
