Thor 2 - Movie Review

@@@@@@@ SPOILERS @@@@@@@@@@@

Loved the first Thor, this one felt a bit off to me. Luckily the last third or so picked up the film overall a bit.

Pros
- Maybe my favourite Stan Lee cameo

Cons
- Some not so great writing where I just thought the character wouldn't do/say that.
- Some directing/editing was bad. I'm only talking about the endings to some scenes being 'off'. Experienced that maybe five times or more. An intercut scene was jarring to begin with.
- Check out the crapstastic camera change (I'm assuming a pick-up) when... Thor turns down the thrown when talking to Odin. It's the CU on Thor.

And someone explain to me... How Loki staged his death? Seems like a magic bullet, like superman turning back time which is a copout.

2.85/5

Edit: seems the movie is rating very well on imdb and rotten tomatoes, I'm interested how you guys view it.

Pretty much the opposite of how you felt.

I hated, hated the first Thor. So much so that I pretty much wrote Branagh down in my book as a waste of a good director's chair. That film had more bad direction, stilted line delivery, and bad lines to begin with than Man of Steel, only without the terrific cinematography and amazing visual effects of the latter (Thor's VFX were about as bad at some points as Olympus Has Fallen).

So the bar might have been set a little lower for myself coming into Thor: The Dark World, but the addition of Alan Taylor as director pretty much cancelled out every negative feeling I had toward this franchise after such an abysmal start.

I thought the film was one of the better comic book movies of the last couple years, actually. The whole "Not only the ENTIRE PLANET OF EARTH, but the ENTIRE UNIVERSE - ALL OF REALITY IS AT STAKE!" schtick is getting incredibly tiresome, and really, it was pretty obvious that Loki wasn't actually dead, I mean... they wouldn't bring him back for a teamup movie just to kill him off, but the film was still Very Enjoyable. The action scenes were great (with the possible exception of the Thor-Malekith faceoff at the end), the VFX were infinitely better than the first, the writing was better, and probably best of all: the humor was much more... humorous. Literally the only good part in the entirety of the first Thor was the coffee shop scene. I could watch that over and over. But this film had me cracking up much more than I thought I would, and without resorting to story-sacrificing gags like the one that consumed Iron Man 3. Reminded me a lot of Raimi's first Spider-man, a film this one seems to emulate in its self-aware, double-take style of humor.

I think Taylor pulled off a fantastic job, and I'm glad he's already in talks to return.

3.5/5. Lost points for some predictability and a run-of-the-mill ending, though the last bit with Loki was a great way to tease the next film.

Ha Eric we have the exact same view of the movies, except opposite... if that makes sense.

Spoilers:

Didn't dig the movie as much as I wanted to. Far too many rip offs of other films: hand cut off = nod to empire strikes back, Spaceship teetering over killing bad guy = nod to prometheus, and the whole aliens running through the city causing havoc and the hero's "having to close the portal" plot device.... I mean COME ON.... didn't we see this in Avengers movie?

Well.....Cap 2 trailer looks great at least.
Moreover, when Thor's mom gets offed I couldn't help but notice how similar it was to Bambi watching his mom get taken out as well.

I have been unable to muster the enthusiasm to watch this. I guess I feel like I've already seen it.

You have, heh. I haven't really seen anything "new" out of the Marvel universe in the last several years, with the slight exception of The Wolverine (I'm glad that Fox held onto that one), and the only "new" thing about that one was that it wasn't about saving the whole goddamn world. Marvel/Disney has become McDonald's for superheroes, in my opinion (they just sold four tv series - FOUR - and a mini to Netflix in addition to Marvel: AoS). But like McDonald's, you get what you pay for and while it may be the same thing over and over, I still come back.

For what it's worth, Kramer Morgenthau's photography is pretty fun to watch. Reminded me in some places of Eduardo Serra's work on the last Harry Potter film.

I enjoyed it a lot more than the first one. The first time I watched Thor, I thought it was just OK. The film became a lot better after I watched The Avengers.

I noticed some editing stuff seemed off, but it didn't bother me.

You could tell that the Kat Dennings people got in Marvel's ear about including her more...Or maybe Marvel wanted to include her more due to the popularity of her now? She didn't bother me, but it's obvious that she was being forced on us a little more.

The whole cast outside of Thor definitely received more time. I want more of Lady Sif!

A good advance of the MCU. I look forward of what is to come with Guardians of the Galaxy next August.
