This will never end well...

I never understood why people buy swords. As tacky decoration? Role playing? Back yard heroism? It's certainly not something you can get away with using as personal protection on a daily basis.

Because they like them?

Wishful thinking

Probably it. I guess it's just one of those things where every aspect of your life can't be determined by practicality, but for whatever reason I just find it perplexing and sad. The suspense killing me on whether or not he's going to end up slicing himself or his son/brother open, though.

Why sad? He seems fairly comfortable in his geekiness (enough to be putting videos of himself online), and he seems to be getting enjoyment out of the sword.

As long as he doesn't end up hurting his family with the sword, I say why worry about what he chooses to do with his time.

i JUST LMAO, when it panned to the nerdy kid. He didn't even have to say anything and busted out laughing for some reason. Then when he said "tape" while looking at the camera I started laughing all over again. I dont even know why I think it's so damn funny. Maybe the combination of the elements, buying a sword, then haveing the family gather around while making an " unboxing video" topped off with his excitment, look, and accent. I just find it hilarious. thanks for posting this vid made my day.

HAHA, "OH MY GOSH IT'S SHINEY"

Actually, a martial arts guy in my home town saw someone being robbed by knife, pulled a katana out of his car trunk (belt?!) and fended the guy off.

Granted, probably only happens once every few decades. And well, the guy in this video doesn't look like a martial arts expert.

See, now that's practical and kinda awesome. Probably not as practical as owning a gun, though, but that's not some people's thing. However, I don't know how valid an argument for certain weapons over others would be.

...the guy in this video doesn't look like a martial arts expert.

He sure doesn't. If I were him, I'd put that money into a few martial arts lessons and whip myself into a bit of shape and become really dangerous in way that doesn't just potentially harm myself.

Fixed it for you? ;)
I actually do have a replica wakizashi (like a katana but shorter) that I bought on vacation in Japan, but it's just for decoration and can't actually be sharpened.

I don't think I would ever buy a real sword, because they're expensive and I have no need for it.

I just don't like judging people, even on the internet. Some people like knitting, ice skating and collecting action figures. I don't, but then I don't think they're weirdos for liking those things.

I hate to split hairs on trivialities because it doesn't bode well for my character, but why else is this thread here? But I agree with you to a degree and it's not like I'm judging him unfairly harsh. It mostly seems like this guy has the potential to seriously injure himself and others in chasing a whimsical fantasy. That's mostly the extent of my judgement. I don't see much of a difference between fooling around with a katana blade in the backyard and fooling around with a handgun. They both have the same potential for harm, though one has more range.

You'll get a kick out Cautionary Tales of Swords then (NSFW language). You've been warned!
