This will mess with your head. - Siftables

Wow, awesome stuff.

Seeing this makes me wonder if the future of media will truly be in the hands of the masses and people like us will just shoot cool stuff or record all kinds of random sounds for people to play with and manipulate.

erh nice 'new' idea, but we have seen similar things in the past (albiet in software) have you heard of LabView? (industry standard for Electronic engineers/ Embedded) the idea is snapping together "logo" like prebuilt blocks to make something more complex etc.

It works for simple things, and I think some program language attempted to do something similar to this, programing visually with blocks, but I think such attempts eventually fell apart, the moment you have complex things to do, its faster and easier to type a few lines of program in high level language then to graphically express using symbols and limiting blocks.

its the universal scale:

at one end:
Ease of use = limited control

at the other:
Complexity of use = maximized control

I'm not dissing this idea, just seems like deja vu... (what about Microsofts "surface" idea plus others)

My 2 cents.

True, there is only so much you can do with this kind of tech, but it is pretty cool. Just today I was sitting in a restaurant eating a burger and I suddenly had this idea that what if the menu was a siftable-type of thing? What I mean is there could be a set of siftables on the table that you combine to see pictures of the food. Maybe you press a button on the side of the siftable or the screen could be a touch screen, allowing you to push for more info and hear a description of the menu item. You could put together all kinds of food combinations for your meal. And just think of how fun it could be for a family and their kids. While they wait the siftables could have games and other fun stuff to keep the kids occupied.

Just some crazy ideas, but this tech is pretty cool. Who knows where it could lead?

As for the Microsoft surface idea, what happened with that? I thought that was pretty interesting. Now that would be wickedly fun for video editing, music creation, and sound design.

Maybe Apple will someday release a round display similar to surface. It would in fact, be sorta shaped like... well and apple.

I prefer the contact lens TV screens I read about yesterday.
For the record: That block stuff is a toy for kids and that's all.

Wasn't James Cameron using some sort of retinal display device for something on Avatar? I'll see if I can find it.

As for it being a toy, sure but it is still cool. I could see this stuff being integrated into the next Wii console. Kids would love it.

Another idea, how about siftable tarot cards for fortune tellers?

Hmm. Sort of imagining an editing system where each block is a video clip or other media asset.

Or how about it is a peripheral that you could tie into your timeline on your NLE? Maybe you could assign shots to a single block for a specific scene. What would be really cool is if you could wirelessly access your footage and play it on any monitor in your house.

I would love to be able to sit down on the couch in front of the HD LCD and bring some siftables with me. Then just try out different configurations of a scene and be able to tell the siftables when I want to save a scene or sequence, they will send a signal to my computer to save each edited scene variation as a sequence.

Lots of ways you could go with it -- it probably could be the most user-customizable editing system ever. However you want to work, it should flexible enough to let you do it. Especially if each block is its own CPU.

That's what is so cool about it, you can add more power with each block.

I bet we could see this used for digital music creation first, then the tech would filter down into video editing later on.

One thing it would be cool with this tech and a big screen TV is for storyboards and presenting concepts at a production meeting. You could sit around with your DP, AD, FX gurus, etc... and just hash out different ideas with the siftables if the storyboards where programmed into them. Rearrange to see what works and to see alternate versions of a scene.

Of course, one of the challenges would be carrying around and assembling all the little blocks any time you want to do something even a little bit complex.

But what I like about it is the potential to forget all the trappings we currently have -- forget OSes, forget particular brands of NLEs, etc. -- just do it the way it makes most sense. It could break down walls like never before.
