This just in--I'm an idiot

Well, I was testing the Fly Focus $69 follow focus attachment tonight and managed to send my DVX into a nose drive--cleanly breaking off the front focus assembly on the lens. This would be a first for me as far a camera disasters go--woohoo! I had my DVX with matte box and follow focus mounted to my tripod and I was putting away a muslin backdrop when one end of the muslin managed to snag on a tripod leg and send the whole thing crashing to the floor.

So that pretty much trashed the focus assembly--although it's really basically one plastic ring that has most of the damage. I suppose this translates into replacement of the entire $900 lens assembly, although with a replacement ring, I could pretty much fix the thing myself in about 10 minutes. Plus it looks like a German Panzer division rolled over my French flag. Ah well, my fault for working when I'm tired late at night. I'm too tired right now to kick myself--so I'll do it in the morning when I'm well rested.

Good job Barry!!

I remember I did something like that similar to my crappy Sony....it was on a tripod...and i accidently kicked the leg of the tripod and the damn thing fell over and the camera snapped off the tripod...broke the screw thing thats in the tripod head..and the damn camera fell into a plant...madd dirrt went into it..and i had to get a new Carl Zeiss lens which was like $400 dollar repairs...took the guys who repaired it 2 freakkinnn weeks....but atleast i got a new clean lens..my other one was mass durtty..

Good luck fixing your camera!

Sorry to hear about the bad luck, Barry. Don't kick yourself too hard as you're a very bright individual who had a rare and unfortunate accident. If that's the worst thing that ever happens to you, then consider yourself lucky.

Years ago, I worked for a local CBS affiliate that had a separate production facilty/stage. While cleaning up after a shoot one day, I was rolling up a camera cable when, suddenly, I came to the end of the slack and the cable was connected to a Ikegami HL-79A on a tripod on wheels. Since my back was to the camera, I didn't realize what I was doing. The next tug on the cable caused enough force to overcome the delicate balance of the top-heavy camera configuration and it all came tumbling down (in slow motion, it seemed, at the time). The lens and lens mount sustained enough damage to warrant two days leave without pay and a $7,000+ repair bill. It's a good thing I was an, otherwise, good worker. :)

Damn that musta been scary Terry....if that were me...id pick it up...put it back where it belongs...kinda shuffle myself over to the corner...run for the door and pretend like nothing happend...

Thanks for commiserating blckhawk and Terry. That's a real-life horrow story about that Ikegami--yikes. I'm sure you felt pretty bad. Yes, it definitely happened in slow motion. As I watched the graceful downward arc of the camera and tripod, I thought I could reach out and stop it--but alas, my body was moving in slow motion too. :)

Tough break Barry. I can't imagine why your so tired (cough cough ftp constant harrassment all weekend cough cough). Damn. Sorry brethren

Well; at least it's fixable

(A German Panzer Division. Heh heh)

I can't say the thought didn't cross my mind, but my conscience kicked in quickly and determined my course of action.

Oh, yeah... plus there was a witness. I was busted.

Ha. I was out late on Friday celebrating my cousin's engagement and the wine was flowing. So I've been zombie-like today. I've discovered a stupid DVX trick, though. My camera is otherwise alright, so I can just pull the lens cam out of my pocket, press it against the lens and focus when I need to.

And now we all have communal guilt since you were testing the fly focus for our benefit...sigh. Thanks for the effort

Errr, well communal guilt is still better than communal showers.

You guys use such big/weird words...communal?!?! sounds like something that you hear on Court TV or something..

Sorry to hear about this, Barry_S. Fortunately, in today's neutral political climate, you don't have to be an idiot. You can choose to be unique. ;)

Very sorry to hear about that dude. Reminds me of the time I tumbled down a staircase holding a laser printer... back when laser printers were big and EXPENSIVE...

Did the Fly Focus survive? That would be a surprise... well, I guess it depends on where the secondary impact took place...

The Fly Focus survived without a scratch--well protected by the mattebox and lens. The secondary and all subsequent impacts consisted of my palm against my forehead.:embarasse

Those are the ones that always get ya in the long run. :(

Sorry to hear that, perhaps it's reverse karma. You've done so much great work with the DVXfest that the gods decided to punish you.

Well, the gods better be rewarding me with an HVX then--or I've sacrificed my last goat to Baal.
