This from Panasonic RE: DV2500/vista

Dear Sir,

AGDV2500 was designed and manufactured to be compatible with Operating Systems present on the market at the time of this DV product introduction.

Unfortunately when new Windows OS has been introduced, it did not provide support for all existing DV models available on the market. You could express your concern for this issue directly with Microsoft.

To accommodate Panasonic existing customers with older VTRs, the firmware upgrade was developed to add additional functionality to AGDV2500 VTRs manufactured before Windows Vista introduction.

Upgrade is currently available.

It is not a firmware upgrade one can perform himself. Special programming tool is needed.

Please forward your AGDV2500 VTR to the following address:

Panasonic Broadcast & Television Systems Service

50 Meadowland Parkway 2A-4

Secaucus, NJ 07094

Attn: Cliff Gawel

800-491-9986

The cost of the upgrade is $130.00 plus S/H. Before sending VTR for an upgrade make sure IEEE1394 port of AGDV2500 is fully functional. The easiest way is to connect it to the camera through IEEE1394, and verify footage can be transferred between units.

If your VTR production is before April 2004 (serial before D4A4701JV3), it may require replacement of DV CPU PCB (LK2137D0A) for DV/DVCAM playback improvement. Cost of the replacement of LK2137D0A is in addition to the cost of the upgrade. Actual need for it and cost would be determined upon receiving the unit.

AGDV2500 with serial number "H7E*******" or newer (July production G7E1992JV3 to G7E2021JV3 and manufactured August/2007 and later) have new firmware installed and are Vista compatible.

Regards,

Panasonic Broadcast & Television Systems Company

Some additional information about the Panasonic AG-DV2500 (and Sony Vegas 8)

I purchased a DV2500 deck off of eBay - and found that when it is connected to a Windows XP computer - it should first be connected directly to the computer (without Vegas in capture mode). Windows then senses it as new hardware and loads a dedicated driver for the Panasonic Camera and VTR. Took me a while to figure that out. (Tried initially to access it from Vegas directly.) Vegas can then control it for log and capture work.

If you're getting a used deck - ask what the drum hours are - this is on a menu displayed when the Eject and Stop button are held down simultaneously (no tape in the unit.) This also works with the JVC BR3000 - which is a clone (or vice versa) You'll find a wide range of use - I've seen some decks with almost 1,000 hours - and some with less than 50 hours. The drum is rated for 2,000 hours, according to the manual.

I called Panasonic to ask about the information in the letter above. What I was told was that upgrade is for Vista, no intent for Windows 7 (if anyone is curious.) Generally, the CPU replacement (as opposed to just the firmware upgrade) is only for older units - prior to 2004 (as mentioned above.) Look at the second digit in your serial number - that's the year of manufacture (I suspect the first letter is the month.)

Panasonic in Secacus (NJ) only services the higher -end units - not the DV2500. There are two other service centers in the NY/NJ metro area listed on the web site that work on the DV2500. Interestingly - the big deal with the CPU replacement is that it is a surface mount, and needs a special de-soldering rig to get it off. If they have it, they unsolder it and you only pay for the replacement CPU. If the service center doesn't have the rig - they then just quote you on replacing the entire circuit board its mounted on - $$$ (Apparently the two service centers in the NY/NJ area have that rig.)

I just realized my AG-DV2500 doesn't work with Windows 7 and found this thread. Since I mainly use it to as a converter to monitor out of Vegas 9 on an old JVC CRT, I hooked up my old Canopus ADVC-100 and it works. I would think the 2500 was popular enough for Microsoft to write drivers for it.

Oh, my 2500 seems to be from Oct 2003 when I purchased it new.

Free Panasonci AG -DV2500 Service Manual

There is a AG DV2500 service manual posted at

http://www.eserviceinfo.com/download.php?fileid=43310

it is mislabeled as Samsung - comes in 8 RAR parts (files) of 2.9 M each and you need a RAR decoder for it (which can be found on the web) - you need to download all 8 before unpacking it - end result is 42 files, mostly pdf, some tif and a sgm (whatever that is)

don't download the other file labeled as Panasonic DV 2500 in 5 parts - won't unpack

head cleaning instructions are on page 2-6

the eserviceinfo.com site is good place to check for other manuals you might need
