Thinking about building a computer... How does this look?

Tomshardware just did a "system builder marathon" and I was thinking about building a computer somewhere along the lines of the mid price one, which you can find more info here: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/05/09/system_builder_marathon/

Would this be good enough for vegas, premiere pro, and after effects. Right now my comp. can handle vegas pretty well, but once I start loading on effects its boggs it down. But for Premiere Pro and after effects, those can barely run.

specs of my current computer:
pentium 4 CPU 2.00GHZ
1 GB of RAM
Nvidia GeForce FX 5200
windows xp home

Somethin' tells me we're gonna need a Computing/Technology Sub-Forum.

For Video games, Computers, etc.

Build looks nice, Pfista. I dunno how they're calling it mid-range. Maybe mid-to-high. 8800 card and all.

When you gonna purchase?

Well right now I'm in the preliminary stages of research, which means if I do end up getting one it'll probably be in a couple of months. Maybe mid summer. They're calling it mid range compared to the other ones they made.

Here's the comparison of the three: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/05/11/system_builder_marathon/
The high end is like $3300, while the mid is $1200 and the low is about $500 I think.

Yeah we should definitely lobby for a Computing sub-forum. With new IT workflows, it's actually part of this whole process.

Pfista-- Yeah, they're nuts. That "mid-range" is quite a nice computer for 1200. I'm amazed at how they can squeeze an 8800 into that budget.

Mark-- You'll have to customize it, first. It depends. Worksations are steel steeds, though. You'd be solid with a Dell workstation so long as you didn't have anything else in mind but using it as it sits. By the way, look for a PM later with a pretty desktop screencap in it.

If you can afford it, DEFINITELY a pro monitor. I WISH I could afford it, my LCD's are fashion statements at best. But they look fine to me.

At the very least, a Kona PCI-E card and a pro monitor. I'll be looking into that as I attempt to "get into" editing.

ALSO!!! MAtrox is now open-source. Any DVI capable LCD can take advantage of it so you can look into that as an alternative.

Where can I look into the pro monitors? Or can you give me a price range for those? I wouldn't want to spend over $500 for monitors. Thats why 2 lcd's would probably be good for me.

Yeah, I know, but even the base system, with one processor. Thinking about starting with that, one dual core XEon but then upgrading later.

Cannot wait for your PM!!! :)

Depends on what size you get/want. Cause they sure aren't a real need! You'll have to search around for which ones will suit your budget, or throw out desired screensizes, widescreen or not, and I'll check around between me favored vendors.

Harris - Here's the thing about the current config: You get the workstation power, work-horse haul but neither of those configurations would hold up to A properly self-built E6600 rig. I'm confident in that.

For 1500.00, you could build an E6600 rig w/monitor more than likely and get more than those two Dell Workstations. At higher configs? I'm not sure how my system compares to an actual workstation. At stock, I'd be willing to say I'd be on the same level, I've just got the option to do more since I've got all custom parts and peripherals.

Aka-- The overclock.

Right, but what I thought was I could buy it with one processor, and then be able to add another one later. Your MOBO does not have dual processors, right?

It might be moot. Once you send me that PM, I am getting my shopping list from you!!!! :):):)

I have Quad Processors. The Workstation boards have two sockets that'll fit a processor in each. You CAN upgrade later, so long as the CPU type is the same. Problem is, those Server board CPUs are expensive as heck.

That's another reason that spurned me onto purchasing a Core 2 instead. Anyway, we can chat it up in Pms. We hijacked the thread!

original poster -- Build looks solid ESPECIALLY if you're editing in Premiere CS3/pro 2.0.

I don't really care about widescreen. I'm fine with regular. And as for size, 19" would probably be best. Maybe give a couple of inches. What about the one I had linked to earlier here:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001085

Oh, and I will be editing SD footage from my dvx100b. So I think this mid system would be perfect for me

Oh then you're more-than-golden, dude. 2 x of those Samsung screens will sit nicely. Make sure they're DVI out, though, because if you're building a similar system then you'll wanna take advantage of the digital ports on the video card.

you'd be better served building it yourself that buying a dell. the reason is that dell charges a premium on all the parts they install. for example, if you decide you want to add a high end processor such as the xeon x5355, here is what they charge...

dell: $1,639
newegg: $1,197
$442 markup for the same processor

want to add a 750gb drive for editing?
dell: $629
newegg: $239

you get the idea...

Have to take in account that it's a sever board with a 771 socket more than likely. that jacks the newegg price up a tad. But yeah, i'd suggest building.

Does it matter if the monitor is DVI-D and the card is DVI-I? What does that mean?

According to Wikipedia :
  • DVI-D (digital only)
  • DVI-A (analog only)
  • DVI-I (digital & analog)
So then digital would be supported right?

Nevermind it says right there...its dual link. So yes it will work.
