I purchased a DVX100b for shooting conferences in hotel rooms. Setup is between 40 to 100 feet away from subject being recorded. I haven't used camera yet for shoot but i believe the 10x zoom will not be good enough. From what i have read i have bought the wrong camera for my needs..ok....Should i go ahead and purchase XL2 with 20x lens or buy a centry telephoto adapter for DVX?

I know i am a dumb*** for not researching more before buying DVX100b....

Any advice? got a shoot in 3 weeks in Las Vegas...

thanks,

you would seem to be better served by renting for the event and deciding later on what you need in the long run.

Company i work for doesn't want to rent...wants to buy....im thinking of buying DVX from them and then purchase a XL2 for event recordings...just trying to decide if it is worth paying 1300 for century telephot lens for DVX?

No possibility of getting closer than 40-100 feet? I realize no one wants a videographer in the front distracting everyone - however, I have taped many events and always insisted on being up front . The solution was to simply
bring the tripod down to about 3' level and sit down on the front row. In the front, a camera mounted shotgun usually gets decent sound and the video is awesome and stable.

Otherwise, rent something with a long lens.

don't kow if i would be able to set up in front...but if possible it would be best solution....I think i am going to go ahead and purchase a xl2 since i will be taping more conferences in the future...and setup will most likely have to be in the back everytime near the audio mixing board........

Thanks,

It is really not that big of a deal in my opinion. The DVX is superior to the canon product, so frame it a little looser. or..Shoot more from the side of the room

There will always be a loss of quality, but since you already have the DVX and you need more telephoto it would appear to be the easiest and most effective solution

Hmmm... I'm going to have to disagree here. 10x vs. 20x IS a big deal. Shooting "a little looser" is one thing, but we're talking a lot more than just a "little looser". It's really the difference between shooting so wide you have no detail of people's face's or what's going on, or having the detail and pulling off a good, descreet shot.

I have one dvx and one XL2, and that's why I aquired the XL2, because of it's zoom, and the OIS is much better. I shoot events also, and I use the XL2 at the back of the room, and when called for, I set the dvx near the front of the room, over to one side.

I hate to say it, but if I were in your shoe's, I'd pick up the XL2. Or, actually, I'd now go with the canon xh-a1 cause it has the best of both worlds. Still keep the 20x, and the option to go HD.
