think I've found reasonable backup/archive solution

The Sony AIT2 Turbo tape drive w/Firewire sells for about $1400, 80GB tapes for about $45. So far I've only found good opinions, and it's made for media files.

Not exactly the iPod in terms of consumer awareness, but I think it's a mature, proven solution that, unlike Blu=Ray, is available now!

In addition to Retrospect, there's this software specifically for FCP backups:

i think tape backup is outdating itself. hard drives are getting so cheap. i have just started buying new ones when one fills up. i keep a firewire enclosure unscrewed so i can quickly switch out drives when i need to. it takes 2 minutes to swap out drives. i now have a stack of hard drives with old projects. the best part is, i can plug in an old drive and immediately open the projects without the need to transfer from tape or dvd. at over 50 cents/GB for the tapes, you can buy drives for that. just my opinion.

The CompUSA branded external hard drives are cheap and great for storage.....I have 3 and all have been working great. For FCP I use the G-Raid and keep it exclussive to FCP.

yep, but harddrives, when they fail, everything is lost... Tape can dameage one or two files, but not whole gb's of data...
