They really work!

So...

I was out shooting with the wonderful DVX the other day. We had a shot that called for us to climb to the top peak of a mountain. Needless to say, carrying equipment up a near vertical incline in loose terrain doesn't go together well!

We managed to get up and get the shots we needed (well sort of anyway). Coming back down though.....

I dropped the DVX :(. I got to watch my wondeful 3K camera literally bounce down a near vertical incline for several hundred feet. It was in pelican case at the time but that wasn't much comfort!

Anyway... when we got back down I opened the case and started the cam up to see if anything survived. Amazingly, the camera was in perfect condition.... as far as I can tell the back focus is even in good shape still! Definitely get a GOOD case if you are getting a camera! It saved my ass this time!

Damn! That had to suck watching that. lol
How did the case hold up-anything break on it?
I'm getting a 1550 soon

Yeah that pretty much sums it up right there :D.

The case isn't too bad off actually. I'm somewhat surprised. The fall put some nice deep gashes in the plastic (bouncing off rocks) but the case itself is certainly in good enough condition to continue using (assuming that the stress didn't fry the structural integrity in a non-visible manner). It certainly did feel like winning the lottery! And I don't have to pay taxes on it either ;)!

JY: I wish I DID have footage of the whole event! It would, at the very least, be interesting to watch .

EDIT: No the case isn't particuarily heavy. It's some strong polymer that's strong but (relatively) light. It's certainly not as heavy as a metal case.

Wow Shaw! I am impressed . . . hundreds of feet . . . . seriously . . . . like a free fall drop of a couple of seconds or was it bounce bounce all the way? I am sure the way it knocks, falls will make a huge difference as in how many g's are transfered to the camera, but truly impressive. I have a 1600 with all my gear inside . . . . lets hope I dont get to do this ultimate test, but thanks for the report :)

I dropped my DVX off my tripod, (thought I had secured it into the bolt, but apparently didn't), scared the hell out of me. The lcd door is a little looser than it should be, but everything still works. It's always scarey when you see your baby fall.

Speaking of trashing our cameras, I wanna know what happened to the guy who posted a few weeks ago asking if the dvx was waterproof... because he wanted to stick it in a toilet to film. haha

Pelican book of records..

Pelican book of records..

WOW! GADZOOKS!

Hmmm.. I've got two DVX100As in two Pelicans. Fire up the Cessna Nellie, I'm going for the record!

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

On second thought, I'll just have a pint of Guiness.

It was probably a good 300 feet or so. Not any longer. No, it wasn't a free fall! That certainly would have destroyed something I imagine! It just slid/bounced down the slope (a nice tumbling effect) - which was a rather long stretch since we were high up. Luckily a bush caught it after a few hundred feet. The ground was rather soft (the ground giving way was in fact what caused me to drop the case) - certainly not really soft but it wasn't sheer solid rock. The case did bounce a few times so it had to have hit something ####### the way down (I wasn't paying full attention at the time - rather shocked!). I'll get some pics up of the case soon.

I hope you never have to test the case either Theos! It's not a fun experience! Craigs idea of a Guiness is much more preferable

I have had my DVX in a Pelican 1550 since I bought the thing (never dropped it off a mountain!) and it has worked great. The feeling of security and peace of mind is well worth the money. Wouldn't you agree Shaw?

If you are considering the Pelican I highly recomend. I wouldn't get anything smaller then the 1550, and make sure you know exactly how you want the camera placed before you start tearing foan, from personal experiance. Um, not me but this friend of mine, yeah, a friend.

Pelican cases are incredible.
I'll try to make this a quick story....

I once had a camera (a PD150 at the time) in a Pelican case on a boat.
There was a bit of a problem, nothing too dangerous, and the boat filled with about a foot of water. I was trying to help sort out the troubles so I wasn't paying that much attention.
When I turned around, I saw that my friends wife had taken my case off the shelf I'd put it on to keep it dry, and she was in fact STANDING on it. Apparently she didn't realize what was in the case, and she said her feet were getting cold from standing in the water.

The entire case was pretty much submerged.
I almost had a heart attack.

Long story short...when I opened the case it was bone dry and the camera was perfectly fine. A good case is definitely a worthy investment.
