There's got to be something else...

Hello my fellow friends of this forum. Today was a historic day in the life of Pyriphlegethon; I've finally had it with Premiere. Actually, now that I think about it, it wasn't that historic since every time I work with Premiere I end up extremely frustrated and enraged. I'm on PPro vs. 1, and its instability, lethargy, lack of native 24p support, and general unworkingness have caused me to repeatedly swear in my wrath that the time for change is nigh.
Vegas looks like the wisest alternative, either Vegas or FCP, but I was wondering if I could ask Vegas users a couple questions.

-I like Premiere's integration with AE. It's nice to be able to take my project right in to AE and work with it. I'm going to lose this if I go Vegas, correct? How does one export footage from premiere for use in Vegas? From what I've seen of Vegas's capabilities, however, it looks like much of what I do in AE could be done right in the NLE.

-I'm liking the Magic Bullet effects I've got in Premiere. When I don't have time to get my own filmic look it can be nice to throw them on and wait a couple years for them to render. Does vegas come with Magic Bullet? Also, to get 5.1 encoding, do I have to buy the DVD Architect with it? I've already got Encore (which in all honesty has been about as reliable as Premiere) so I'd rather only have to afford Vegas itsself.

-The future could hold HiDef possibilities. It may be a very very long time into the future, but if I do ever go HiDef I'd like an NLE to match. Does Vegas do HDV? And what's with the new panasonic P2 solid state thing? How is HiDef written to a P2 card, (it's not HDV, correct?) and do I have to have a special plug-in for my NLE to match it?

-I do like PPro much better than 6.5, I'll give it that much. I quite like the Color Correction, but from what I've heard Vegas matches it without a problem. I like being able to create nestable sequences, too; can Vegas do this?

I know this is kind of a long post, if anyone is willing to answer any of these questions I'd appreciate it. I feel sick inside to think I just paid so much money for PPro. There's other stuff you'd much rather spend your money on than an NLE when your only 17. I don't hate Premiere with the passion of many exPremiere users, but it's just not stable enough for me to work with. Vegas is seemingly reknowned for its stability. I wish Sony had some sort of "trade in your version of Premiere and get $400 off your purchase of Vegas" deal. I'm going to have to do some searching to see where I can get it the cheapest. I'd buy an older version, but it looks like Vegas 5 has some pretty worthwhile features.

Again, thank you very much for your time.

I feel your pain. About a year ago, after using Ppro, I decided that I had it with adobe's bull headedness in this program and switched to Vegas. To answer some of your questions.

-Yes you lose project integration, but like you said, a lot of things can now be done within Vegas. For other effects I export the scene as an uncompressed AVI.

-Yes you can use magic bullet with Vegas, it also comes with the 5 free plugins. Do get the Vegas+DVD package, the slight increase in price is worth it as you also get the mpeg2/AC3 5.1 encoder. You have to pay extra for this in Premiere.

-The latest version of 5.0 does support HDV natively, remember, sony makes Vegas, so they almost have to. It has not been announced yet if Vegas will support DVCPRO 50 or HD, but I'll assumet that once the camera is announced formally, or upon release, to stay in the game both Vegas and Premiere will have to support it.

-I have found the CC tools in vegas to rival those of Premiere, and in some cases I like them more.

-This version of Vegas does not have nestable timelines, but you can use multiple instances of vegas, all opened at the same time to work in a similar manner.

In the end I have never regretted my switch to Vegas, it is way more stable, way faster workflow, and perfect 24p support, something Adobe still cannot claim even with premiere PRo 1.5.

You won't regret it.

Well, yes and no. Yes you can edit HDV footage natively, and create HDV-compliant transport streams.

But no, in Vegas 5.0 by itself, you cannot capture from or output to HDV tape. You need to get the $149 Cineform ConnectHD program to allow that.

Assumedly this will be rectified at NAB, but no announcement has been made regarding that.

Keith,

I have the very first version of PPro, not 1.5, so some of my issues may be resolved in the newer version. A couple things that have irritated me, though:

-Instability; the program likes to freeze often, and sometimes will corrupt the entire project file, creating a need for multiple backups. It is VERY frustrating to start a render over night for something due the next day, and find it has crashed half-way through.

-Speed; PPro doesn't seem to be very quick for me. I can't watch a clip with a simple fade in real time. I saw Vegas operating on a standard system with multiple effects at a rate I've never been able to achieve with Premiere.

-Oddities; Premiere just likes to do weird things to me sometimes, too. If I try to make a simple slide show, it will pick random pictures and display green instead of the picture, or ingore the picture completely. Sometimes the audio rubber bands will stop working, and Premiere will ignore them until I restart. Often times the program won't let me play my video. I can scrub through the timeline normally, and do everthing else, but pressing play does nothing. It's a strange and irritating little problem. These aren't huge things, but they can become quite a bother.

Like I say, some of these may no longer be issues with 1.5. I just debated with upgrading, when so many people seem to prefer Vegas so much more. This was just a short list, wait until I start working on my next project if you want the full works on why I am often irritated by the software...
