Ahhh. As you can see by my avatar, the Big W from Stanley Kramer's IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD means something to me. As a kid, I looked for it and actually found it in Porteguese Bend in Palos Verdes south of L.A. Well, it's burning. Bummer.
Of course, lives and property are the most important. But always sad to see movie memorabilia vanish. 4 different fires burning in Southern California.
Of the four palm trees that were planted to form the 'W' only one remained when the laserdisc documentary was edited. New visitors to the park, we are told, often say they feel as if 'they've been there before', even if they can't remember the MAD WORLD connection.
When I found it, only 3 of the trees still remained. Maybe the current owners could re-create it (like Sad Max suggested), but out of those fake cellular towers that are all over Southern California that are supposed to look like palm trees. Okay, I retract that idea. Another icon here in Southern Cal, In 'n Out Burger, has palm trees planted in the shape of an "X" at many of their restaurants (and as icons on their soda cups). The owner was also a big fan of "Mad World" and this was his salute to the film. The only bad part of leaning the palms into "X"'s and "W"'s is that, as they grow, the growth goes straight up (i.e. not continuing in the direction they are leaning). This was very evident when I saw the remaining 3 palms.
