Theatre volunteer in need of advice

Greetings all. I am a volunteer at a community theatre and we recently had a 16 unit Sennheiser mikroport wireless microfphone set donated to us. All of the apm units work well but most of the mics are shot (Actually the wires are more shot than the mics). I am looking for an inexpensive way to fix them up so that they are usable.

I am a tech geek with a bit of electronics/robotics experience and have the equipment to do many of the repairs but I am unsure what the best course would be too take. Buying new mics is not an option at this time, though we did buy one of the Countryman B3 Lavalier Microphones to test a lower end mic and it worked well.

Any thoughts on how to repair the wire sets. They seem to be the main problem, but I am unsure if I can simply soder new shielded cable to them.

Thanks in adviace.

Macgeek,

Not sure which mics you're talking about that are shot - are the ME2/ME4 stock low-end lavs that ship with the G2 and other kits or are they MKE2's? Big difference - throw away the ME2/4's, try to fix the MKE2's - while they're not the best, they're not bad.

As far as the B3 goes, it is pretty much the standard in theatrical use even though it is bigger than the B6. It is a bit more durable, especially given quick changes and the other stuff that goes on in theater that does not happen (as often) on a film set. I don't think you would go wrong in upgrading all your mics to B3's. (And, they make them in all variations of skin tone color, so easier to hide in plain site.)
