New Yorkers are on his side, says Donald Trump

New York billionaire Donald Trump has attacked the plans for a new skyscraper on the Ground Zero site, describing the Freedom Tower design as "disgusting". The businessman says he is giving his support to a rival design based closely on that of the destroyed Twin Towers. The rebuilding of the World Trade Center site is of crucial financial and emotional importance to New York.

Mr Trump's intervention comes as the entire project has fallen into chaos. It is at least a year behind schedule. The entire future of Daniel Libeskind's Freedom Tower design is also facing the axe because of concerns about security.

Mr Trump said the design, winner of an international competition which attracted some of the world's most renowned architects, was "a piece of crap". At a widely reported news conference in the city, he claimed that if the Freedom Tower was ever built, it would mean that "the terrorists have won".

Instead, Mr Trump is backing a plan by engineer Ken Gardner, which looks remarkably similar to the old Twin Towers - only one storey higher, and with better fire-fighting systems. Mr Trump said he had received thousands of letters from New Yorkers backing his favoured proposals.

He insisted that the plans were what most Americans saw as an appropriate response to the attacks of 11 September 2001.

Call me a cynic....or whatever....but I think the "Freedom Tower" idea sucked from day one. I'm not saying rebuilding the towers is the answer, but I like it better than the Freedom Tower idea. There for sure *HAS* to be some kind of memorial. That's a given. But....I think it would make people feel alot more normal seeing those two beautiful buildings once again!!

Trump's a prick sometimes....but I think he's right!!

I agree with Trump...I would personally like to see Twin Towers soaring over the city and completing the skyline again. Obviously they would not be the WTC but the sentiment is there and I think his heart is in the right place. Plus it's a kinda of a "Phuck You" to the terrorists...the "you kicked me but I got back up" attitude that I believe would put a smile on many faces...at least mine.

When you were little did a pet ever die and your parents got you another pet that was similar? You knew it was different and that your first pet died...but the memory lived on in the new one...made you feel good. I hope that's not rambling as I'm obviously not trying to compare the two events...but I hope you catch the drift of my thought process.

I still have the picture of Jimi Hendrix posing between the Twin Towers from the low, wide angle....effen sweet. Bring back the Towers.

I Would like to see the towers put back to how they were. Just alittle more state of the art and I do agree with trump that the "Freedom Tower" thing that they are building looks like half a building with a worthis skeliton on the top of it. Whats the point of that unfunctional space. A memorial yes but not half the building

Almost everybody agrees that they should be rebuilt as they were, or close to. I wonder why it's such a hard concept to sell?

I think it has something to do with the name "Freedom Tower." It just sounds stupid to me. Much like "Evil Doers."

"In a nutshell," said Trump, "Freedom Tower should not be allowed to be built. It's not appropriate for downtown Manhattan. It's not appropriate for Manhattan. It's not appropriate for the United States, and it's not appropriate for freedom."

That thing looks hideous. I hope they rebuild something that looks familiar.

I with Trump and you guys on this also

The new design looks to "Cemetery" or like Trump said "Like a skeleton".

9/11 was a terrible tradgedy and they should re build the towers but trump isn't an honest man. I'd hate to see the towers re built by him. Hes ripped thousands of people off to get where he is. I really don't understand americas love for that kind of a person.

Trump once said, after declaring bankrcuptcy for the umpteenth time... and I paraphrase, "see that bum over there lying on the sidewalk? That guy is a billion dollars wealthier than I am right now!" ...and yet, somehow this media savvy character manages to get out of his financial commitments every single time. That's a documentary in and of itself.

Regardless of how I feel about the towers being rebuilt by a bad hair piece. That thing in the pic looks like it should belong to the fantastic four or lex luthor.

Good question. I wonder if "they" are afraid of offending victims' families, etc. by erecting such a similar structure - as if we just rebuilt and moved on with little worry about what happened.

I'm not saying that is my point of view. Rather, it *might* be the underlying, unspoken sentiment of those who want something that looks different from the original towers.

Dunno... just thinkin' out loud (with typed words). :)

Make 'em just like the originals, but with a giant hand on top giving a single-digit salute.
