The Wire

OK, so I searched and couldn't find a specific thread for this show, surprising, maybe I'm just a poor searcher.

Anyways, I'm way behind and just started watching it on hbogo, amazing show, finished the first season this morning, had to start the next episode before I left the house, it really is as good as I had heard.

Was one of my favorite shows on TV. Very gritty and real. The cinema quality was top notch. There is still no other show like it IMO.

I agree Ian-T. Because it was a series I almost took it for granted until it was over. Being from Baltimore makes the show a bit more interesting for me. When I'm in the city driving pass many of the street corners where the show took place it gives me a great construct to work from. I was thinking about trying to recreate some of the shots, scenes and compositions used on various episode for a short. Just haven't found the time. Great show.

Amazing Show (except season 2-The docks I believe). I was sad it was over. Omar was the best! My favorite season was the one with the kids and michael and snoop were dumping the bodies. Just fantastic.

This show has ruined other tv shows for me. After watching The Wire you realise how formulaic and unrealistic other tv shows are, they become almost unwatchable. I couldn't even enjoy "American Gangster" because at the back of my mind I kept thinking "The Wire did this better". The season that focused on the kids was so heart breaking (because you know it's probably happening in real life), I would have trouble rewatching it. I think Mad Men and Breaking Bad are excellent successors to The Wire and share many similarities.

The Wire ruins all other cop shows. I was never into Law and Order, but it seems like such a joke after watching the Wire. And that makes sense, the television bible even says that that's the intention for the show, that it will make all the other procedurals that came before seem like a joke. It's a good read.

That is fascinating, interesting to see how characters changed between when that was written and when they started shooting, particularly the way they initially describe Stringer Bell, much different than the way he is played.

I wish they had stayed with Stringer Bell till the end. Marlo wasn't a very interesting character because he was basically a thug, I couldn't understand how he could have gotten so powerful. Maybe that's how it is in real life, all the intelligent business minded gangsters are being replaced by amoral thugs.

They were definitely making a statement about the changing times. Not so much about intelligent, business-minded, as about community. It seemed like even though Stringer and Avon were bad guys, they did have some moral code and set of rules. They abided by the basketball game rules, and the loser paying for the party. They abided by the Sunday truce - until those knuckleheads broke it.

Just like that scene with the Bunk and Omar, when Bunk is talking about the thugs in the old days who told him to go home school boy, he don't belong with them. Now adays, the thugs would try to get the kid on the corner.

Marlow has no morals at all. He is almost inhuman, driven by one thing only: the need for power.

The wire is my favorite show, movie, play, book, song, everything! it's so powerful it crosses platforms.

But if you like the wire and quality work that went into it all around here are some more David Simon productions

the corner- the original wire a fantastic gritty mini series

generation kill- a rolling stone reporters look into the first weeks of the Iraq war

Treme - following the jazz community in New Orleans 6 months after hurricane Katrina

I love Simon and everything he does the wire is his opus but these other shows are right up there with the wire

oh and there is homicide which I have not seen yet

I agree about "The Corner" starting that feel and look of "The Wire." But "The Wire" is definitely one of a kind. I don't have time for television...but that show always caught my attention. I was so dissapointed when Stringer got strung. What also bugged me out about the show was finding out that a lot of the major players were in fact....British!! They did a real good job at faking the funk. There were a few moments when their accents slipped through...but for the most part they seemed authentic. Oh....and I loved that last season.

That's what I'm talking about....Location...location...Location. You got so many areas around there to shoot for days. I would just go out and shoot any and everything,,,lol.
