The "Wild Boyz" Camera

I recently came across a show on MTV called Wild Boyz. I noticed the photography right away. The footage is simply incredible. Knowing the guys from jackass, they probably wouldn't dish out for film every week. It looks like 35mm, but I got a quick glance at one of the camera men and it LOOKED like he was holding a decent sized camcorder. If anyone knows what they use to shoot this show with, PLEASE enlighten me.

Re: The "Wild Boyz" Camera

Don't know anything about the show, but if it looks like 35mm footage and the camera is "decent-sized", meaning a pro shoulder-mount form factor, then it's probably the SDX900, the $25,000 "big brother" of the DVX.

Re: The "Wild Boyz" Camera

John, from what source did you get this information?

If the DVX really looks that good, I'll starve until I can afford one.

Re: The "Wild Boyz" Camera

I watch the show all the time and it is in fact shot with the DVX. If you watch the show you can usually see the cameramen carrying around DVX's every episode. I also remember reading an article somewhere that mentioned that they were using the DVX.

Re: The "Wild Boyz" Camera

Second what JOE said. I read it somewhere (can't remember) and have seen a DVX in their hands. It looks exactly like the DVX footagewise.

Re: The "Wild Boyz" Camera

Speaking of MTV and the DVX, did anyone catch the DVX in the Nelly - Tip Drill video?

I was at a friend's house when I caught it. It was funny, my buddies were all diggin the naked chicks and here I was getting excited about the DVX in the guy's hand. :'(

Re: The "Wild Boyz" Camera

That's incredible. I've been working with a $700 sony camcorder for the past 5 years or so, but now that I'm getting a little more serious about the quality of the image (since I've already mastered the art of storytelling 8) ) I want to move up.

I saw what looked like 24p footage, and then I saw the size of the camcorder and thought to myself, "the only camera I know of that's that small, with 24p is the DVX." But the picture was so warm, and clean; I didn't know a camcorder was capable of such things.

Many thanks to those that have replied.

Hey Exomniac!
Yes, this show "Wild Boyz" is using DVX, I guess DVX100, I know this because I was watching something like "All Access" or "Behind The Scenes" of that show, and yes they were shooting with DVX!! :D

Re: The "Wild Boyz" Camera

Yeah, I watch a clip of the show last week and caught a glimpse of the DVX100 also. Had a nice Shotgun on it.

Re: The "Wild Boyz" Camera

ok, so i'm watching wildboyz as steve-o sneeks up to one of the cameramen to place a tarantula on his back...the cameraman's holding his dvx in one hand while screaming and trying to get the spider off w/ the other hand...

i'm wondering, why aren't there any jaggies in their footage?

Re: The "Wild Boyz" Camera

Why would there be?

Progressive scan=no jaggies, and I belive the hardware dv codec smooths the 4:1:1 artifacts seen in Final Cut Pro and some other NLES. If it doesn't, they're easy to smooth in post.

Although I doubt they are shooting 24p...probably 30p.

Once you have 24p there is no reason to shoot anything else!

:D
