The whole GI 2 Delay Situation: Discuss

I know there was a thread about GI Joe: Retaliation somewhere on DVXUser, but I can't find it. I really looked, but it had a vague title! Mods feel free to delete this thread if it's redundant.

A few months ago we all had a good laugh over the fact that they were killing off the original cast in the first 10 minutes of the next film.

I have to admit I enjoyed GI Joe and was looking forward to the sequel, no matter who is in it. I saw trailers that said it was coming out on the 29th of June. That day came and went, I figured they just pushed it back a few weeks. Finally got around to investigating the situation. March 29th, 2013? WTF????? I won't go into the details, you can read the article linked above or similar on the net.

Take out the fact of whether you like this crap or not….is this not an insane push-back time? It just seems so weird. I'm sure it will be a box office bomb, now more than ever.

I think it's incredibly stupid on the part of the studio. I wasn't a fan of the first movie (though I admit it was "fun") but even I was excited to see the second one. The trailers were done very well and it seemed poised to definitely be better than the first. Now they're going to have to market the film all over again and I imagine a lot of people will not be interested this time around. Even if there were major problems with the film, really poor decision.

Yeah, I remember seeing one during the Superbowl. So now, flash-forward to 2013…and are they going to run an updated spot during the big game? Really dumb. I guess they are banking on the success of Channing Tatum and figured they made a mistake killing him off. I could see the film getting pushed back till the holiday season, but the release date is bizarre.

well its not the first time a movie got pushed back.

I'm not saying GI Joe has the same mass appeal but movies being pushed back is not a new thing. I do find it bizarre that they waited so late but.. they should have seen have realized sooner that spiderman and batman were coming so soon after long before they did. I can understand people saying they wont be as interested but at the same time I don't get it. Did you want to see the movie in the first place? I generally dont go to the theater and so I wait for a movie on redbox which is maybe 6 to 7 months after theater release. I dont choose to not watch movies because I have to wait for them on redbox. Im either interested in a movie or I am not. Waiting for something doesn't cause me to lose interest right away. I mean what else will really be going on in March of next year. There shouldn't be any big competition.
I heard they were also spooked from how terrible battleship did which is a movie that should not have been made or should have had better casting. Nothing against Taylor but he doesn't have the star power yet.

On an unrelated note. The studio declared it a failure after the first weeked.

I know they dont get full ticket price back but it seems they brought in a good chunk for it being such a failure. Also DVD and blu ray sales will bring more money in. And later all the TV deals it gets. It should make money in the long run but I guess the studio wants to make the budget back the first weekend.

The big Studios can afford to sit on a title that they feel will tank now, but may do alright late winter early spring. Most of the general audience will not know it was supposed to be out already by the time it hits.

They've all ready spent a ton of money marketing this film though. They were showing trailers last Christmas for a summer release. I think by the time it finally does get released, a lot of people are going to be thinking "wait... didn't this all ready come out last year?"

They say they're delaying it because they want to convert it to 3D, but I think it must have been so bad that they wanted to do extensive pick-ups / re-shoots.
