The Unspeakable Has Happened

Earlier today, I was packing up some equipment to go off to work - I opened my trunk to place my job's cameras, closed it shut, and then drove off to work. After the 40min drive, I was only seconds away from my office, when I realized that my camera, a T2i with stock lens, was on the roof of my car when I left. I drove all the way back home, rushed out of my car to look around the surrounding blocks that it might have fallen on, asked a store owner if someone was kind enough to leave it, and eventually gave up. In the grand scheme of video and film equipment, I realize that $900 is not much, but with it being the only tool I own, it is a devastating blow to me.

I figured I'd share this for the hell of it, I don't even know what to do right now.

Man, that sucks.

2nd hand commiseration: A good friend of mine packed up a bunch of guitar gear in the back of his pick-up and realized after he got home he had forgotten to close the tailgate. He went back to find his Mesa Boogie combo amp destroyed at an intersection and lost a sweet PRS guitar and a decent Strat. He had just bought the Strat and the kid that found it happened to go to the same store and talked to the same salesman to try to "sell" it to the store. The sales guy recognized the Strat and called my friend who got the Strat back, but the PRS and Boogie were gone forever.

Sorry, dude.

Call the local police and see if they'll take a lost property report (some will). Give them the serial number and they'll enter it into the system as lost. If it turns up in some greeseball's hands and they run the serial number (which we do routinely) it'll hopefully come up.

Or a less cynical scenario: some nice person picked it up and turned it in to the police but they have no way of knowing to whom it belongs. Even if you don't have the serial number, they may have already had it turned in.

Good luck.

I am hopeful that it turns up, RX782. (WTF, are you a robot?)

On the plus side (if there is any) it is only $900, and that's one of the nice things about the t2i: it's price point.

I am really trying to break myself of the habit of putting things on the roof of my car. Yesterday I had my t2i up there while I loaded my kid into his car seat. And I was envisioning the scenario that unfortunately happened to you.
I've been lucky: so far I've only lost a child's bike helmet and a sippy cup or two.

Again, best of luck that it somehow turns up. At least you can vent here.

Captain Hindsight says "checklists are great"... even mental checklists. I work with a guy locally who has the same verbal routine as he looks back on our equipment package in the van... actually looking AT each important bit of gear or saying where it is.

"We got light... we got film... we got batteries... we're shootin' pictures (means we got our cameras)..." etc.

I still do this when I'm shooting a gig by myself... making visual confirmation of each thing I say out loud. Sounds crazy, but it works.
