The Ultimate Set-UP

I just got into digital film. I have been writing for about five years now and just recently completed my first script. I am looking to film it on HD. I like the Vegas editing system. Apart from the basics, I do not know much else. I can direct better than my grasp of technology. What is the necessary equiptment for an aspiring artist? Why? From camera (good, best, ideal) to necessary lenses, books, and other resource, what would you recommend?

1. Camera (good, best, ideal)
2. Lenses (what types of lenses would I need?)
3. Is a boom mic necessary
4. Tripod, dolly, jibs, etc.
5. Editing (what product would be perfect? Titles?)
6. Effects (sound and color correction)
7. Where can I get video learning DVD's? (DMTS, any others)

Find A DP you can trust. You will then be good at what you do & he will be good at his end. It take YEARS to get even ok...but really good is a touch.
Are you in Detroit ?

I can barely afford the equiptment. The movie will be shot El Mariachi Style. It will be shot in a foreign country but the script is universal and grand in its scope. My actors fees are $200 for a week work and the setting is basically great. I have access to a motorcycle and some family are police, plus the law really doesn't interfere too much; I doubt they even care. It basically is a test shoot and then if all works well then I may reshoot it. I orginally wrote the script to be Amercian but I figure I can do it myself there and maybe develop some more ideas and see where it takes me. All that I am worried about is getting the right quality and being able to make all the shots that I want to. I want to be relaxed and have fun.

I figure I will rent:

DVX100 if Ican't acquire an HD camera, a wide angle lens and telephoto lens, along with some filters.

I will buy a tripod. I saw a link on here for matte boxes and the sticky pod both of which I will purchase.

I've seen some people build dollies and jibs. I will build the dolly and attempt the jib.

I will use Vegas to edit. The only problem I have with the system is that when I have to made changes or additions I hate having to move all the files. I wish that I can just designate a point and have everything move around it. Otherwise it is perfect for me. Maybe I'll check out the the dv dojo and do my editing there with some help.

I guess I'll pick up some things as I browse this board. Thanks.

I think I have atleast 1 hour. There is nothing else I want to add to it, however, I continue to examine it and add more depth to the story which helps in directing. The acting will bring to life the time and place, and the characters struggle.

My script is nothing like that though. It is more of a cross between "The man in the Moon and The Outsiders" with some Tarantino dialogue.
