The ultimate dream rig....What's yours?

You have to be self-sufficient, flying your own boom, and no cart. Yep, all chest mounted.

Me:

Sound Design 702T Recorder
Sound Design 302 Mixer
Neumann KMR82 Shotgun Mic
Sennheiser SEBS2 blimp suspension
KTek 16' CF internally wired pole
2 Lectrosonic Bodypack/Receivers with Countryman lavs
And a Petrol PS607

You?

Production sound I assume. I do a lot more FX recording and ironically cary a lot more gear.

For me...
I really like the Oktava's but would trade up to Schoeps.
I'm a big fan of the MixPre but for the odd I need another mic the 302 looks like a good option.
But actually on second though maybe a MixPreD then the recorder is less an issue.
Or toss the mixer and go to a Cantar.
Don't use wireless but I often cary a pair of Countrman wired lavs.
SM58 for those car rigs
A short boom say 9' carbon fiber that collapses to 24" or so.
Fr a shot gun it would be the Sanken
The cases I use are just about perfect. One is the PortaBrace SZW3 and a PortaBrace bag for the recorder/mixer (fits in the first).
I also cary a contact mic an extra pair of 25' cables.
You left off headphones tsk, tsk, tsk. Mine would probably be the Senhieser HD280

Probably Rycote zeppelins with the Lyre suspension

I run Ultrasone HFI 700's for cans. No need for upgrading there, those ARE my dream headphones. But good point.

I am curious... So what kind of price tag are we talking for the above set up.... and do they take checks? (....it'll be good 'til Monday!!!..).

I second to the Cantar. Makes you feel like a super equipped hi-tech soldier. A peaceful one of course. Mics: All Schoeps. Wireless: Zaxcom or newer Lectrosonics.

He said dream, not what you can afford.
I'm sure they take checks. I just don't have any that wouldn't bounce right back in my face ;~)

Where in Detroit?

I must say I fell in love the the Pearl MSH short shotgun MS stereo mic when I heard some ambient nature sounds recorded with one. Missed a sale on a used one darn it! Be a great mic for acoustic music recording.

I like the Neumanns too.

My dream over the shoulder set up would be one that weighs nothing, requires only brain waves to operate, and is invisible.

Seriously, you have no idea how many times, while being frustrated at trying to figure out something in Pro Tools or learning a new piece of sound gear, I've though "wouldn't it be cool if you could just 'think' what you want the thing to do and it'll just do it?"

"Weight" can be solved with the appropriate application of balloons.

"Think to operate" involves an unpaid intern. :cheesy:

Dream rig?

An all in 1 unit the size of a cell phone including recorder, mixer, 8 wireless receivers and 2 transmitters for a camera hop.

Oh and a boom pole made out of the solid form of helium.

Don't forget the high pitched machine that makes every wide lens in the room shatter leaving only the 50mm's and up.

Wow that would beat the transparent Aluminum one I just got from K-Tek

Don't forget the high pitched machine that makes every wide lens in the room shatter leaving only the 50mm's and up.

The French police use one of those for crowd control.
But you for got the dome of silence to cover chatty crew and generators.

Roseville. ... I was just wondering on the prices.

Indian Village, were almost neighbors ;~)

So...
I really like the Oktava's but would trade up to Schoeps.

Pair of Oktava's ~$550 - $600
Schoeps ~$3K - $4K

I'm a big fan of the MixPre but for the odd I need another mic the 302 looks like a good option.

What are they? I think around $1500.

But actually on second though maybe a MixPreD then the recorder is less an issue.

MixPreD, is it even out yet? $750

Or toss the mixer and go to a Cantar.

About $16,000

Don't use wireless but I often cary a pair of Countrman wired lavs.

No idea I bought them used a long time ago, figure $200 each is probably safe.

SM58 for those car rigs
Figure ~$100

A short boom say 9' carbon fiber that collapses to 24" or so.

Haven't priced in awhile but $300 should cover it.

Fr a shot gun it would be the Sanken

missed an "o" there... Ah CSS-5 ~$2K

The cases I use are just about perfect. One is the PortaBrace SZW3 and a PortaBrace bag for the recorder/mixer (fits in the first).

The first ~$375 the second depends on what it's for but figure $150 - $200

I also cary a contact mic an extra pair of 25' cables.

? $50 a pop or so? I haven't bough cables in awhile and the last ones were custom ones.

You left off headphones tsk, tsk, tsk. Mine would probably be the Senhieser HD280

~$100

Probably Rycote zeppelins with the Lyre suspension

Hmm that would have been around $1K a pop but I think they have reduced their prices. And there are other options that are as good though I think I would put the Lyre suspensions in others zeps.

You mean the Cantar-X2? Can't really remember what it cost. I had one, but didn't like the feel of the sliders, so I gave it to my nephew. He wanted to record some of the awful noise he and his friends make out in the garage. He got some of my old mics too, Schoeps I think they were called. Said he needed only four, but I let him have them all. Never really liked the color of those.

(Tongue firmly in cheek while fondling my Azden SMX-1)

Next time you are in the giving mood with gear like that, shoot me a private message right away. :)

The Cantar is expensive, and I never really liked it's user interface, but there are plenty of people out there that really like it, plus it's supposed to be extremely rugged. I've seen guys using it in the open rain with no protection, and even snow and mud, and the thing just didn't care. It still worked. One thing that is really cool is their dual battery system.
