The State of the World's Children Under Threat

Just as a reminder, we need to help these kids out. It's getting worse and worse. Let's all help as much as we can, so that the kids have a chance at having a normal childhood.

World's children suffer under poverty, disease, war: new UNICEF report

Poverty, AIDS and wars are taking a savage toll on children around the world even though progress has been made in improving their lot in certain other areas, the head of UNICEF Canada says.

Every year, the United Nations Children's Fund releases a report on the state of the world's children. The latest report, released Thursday, focuses on how poverty, AIDS and various armed conflicts threaten the whole idea of childhood as a precious time for children to grow and learn.

"These are not the only factors that undermine childhood, but they are certainly among the most significant, with profound damaging effects on a child's chances of survival and development," says the UNICEF report entitled Childhood Under Threat.

"The rights of over one billion children are violated because they are denied one or more of the basic services required to survive, grow and develop," it says - referring to adequate shelter, sanitation, safe water, access to information, health care, education and adequate food.

Similar concerns have surfaced in previous years, so has anything changed?

"If you step back and look at the big sweep of history, yes, it's getting better," David Agnew, president and chief executive of Toronto-based UNICEF Canada, said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

Polio, once a dreaded childhood disease, is close to being eradicated, he said.

"We are down to a handful of countries, down to less than 1,000 cases, we hope. So that's dramatic and very exciting progress."

Another improvement is in the number of people who have access to clean water - critical for the health and survival, especially for children.

"There is a billion more people today who have access to clean water than 10 years ago," Agnew said.

But several "very troubling" threats continue to pose a daunting challenge.

"One is that the disparities in some countries are growing," Agnew said.

"Even in a majority of the industrialized countries that we looked at, the rate of child poverty has actually increased in the last decade."

The report mentions that only four developed countries - Canada, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States - have fewer children living in low-income households now than in the late 1980s.

But Canada is not entirely off the hook.

A chart in the report shows Canada's child-poverty rate, at 15 per cent, is higher than most of the developed countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, or OECD.

And the anti-poverty group Campaign 2000 released a report last month in Toronto saying the child-poverty rate in Canada rose in 2002 despite a strong economy. It was the first increase after five straight years of decline.

The UNICEF report says HIV/AIDS is "tearing at the very fabric of childhood" in the world.

I think helping these kids is the most important thing!

Re: The State of the World's Children Under Threat

Barry, where is your smell for political posts? Because I am going to make one, and then I will shut up.

Woodson, you touched on a very sensitive subject, at least for me.

The 15% child poverty rate statistics is a travesty for two reasons:

1) Even the poorest child in Canada is gazillion times richer than most children in most countries (perhaps all except some European countries plus Japan). So using statistics like that is nothing other than attention grab because it has very little to do with child poverty worldwide.

2) Nevertheless, where are Liberal promises I've been hearing for last fifteen years of federally funded child care programs? Where are nutritional meals for ALL children in our schools? Where is preventive health care for ALL children in our schools? Why can't my friend's (a single mother) daughter who was born in Canada (and hence is Canadian citizen) have free dental care, while her grandmother (my friend's mom) who never worked in Canada (she is an immigrant like myself) has free kidney dialysis twice a week?

Ask your member of parliament.

The problem with child poverty - anywhere - is simple:

CHILDREN DON'T VOTE.

There you go, end of political post.

Re: The State of the World's Children Under Threat

No need... I think nobody else is so foolish as to react to my little rant. :)

Seriously - child poverty is a big problem, especially in the third world. I don't have a solution (and frankly, I don't know if anybody does). World peace would be a nice thing to have, plus an aid program that wouldn't eat most of its donations in administration. I personally have a great respect for people helping children in poor countries. It must be the hardest job in the world - for every child you help, more are born...

And then some psycho parent decides that their child should serve a higher purpose, and make him a suicide bomber... :'(

When will humanity learn anything?

Re: The State of the World's Children Under Threat

I think what matters most is children in the poorest countires, in Canada they have choices, choices that a kid in Africa doesn't have or will never get.

Unicef and Organizations with UN... that money goes to helping the kids, not to the origanization like you might think.

Re: The State of the World's Children Under Threat

How much? Judging from the corruption scandals that plague UN on the whole (ever heard of food for oil?), I am not holding my breath.

I agree with you - in Canada and so called developed world, children (generally) have choices. They have some support in the legal and social environment, so they can live with dignity even when relatively poor. I know because my family used to live on welfare for about four months when I first came to Canada. It wasn't much, but it was manageable.

I think the loss of human dignity (child or no child) is the real problem in the poor countries. The problem is - money never buys dignity for anyone. I am not saying that we shouldn't provide financial help, but I think that more than money we need to convince the bloody rulers in the third world to stop exploiting their own people. Give people freedom, and they are usually able to take care of themselves and their children.

Maybe I am naive, but that's how I see it...

Re: The State of the World's Children Under Threat

So your are saying it's bad donating money to UNICEF?

Please tell me.. cause if you know that it is and have proof I need to know so that I can stop sending my money to waste.

Also if you or anyone knows a organization that is true and gives most the money helping kids in the poorest countries please let me know. I hope there is something like that... a organization really helping out and us knowing the we are helping these kids.

He's asking for help for kids Jerry, not to change the world.

You must be a treat at a dinner party. Everything doesn't have to be political! - At least not here and now.

Exactly.. I don't want to be involved with politics and politics all I want to is help kids, feed them. That's all I care about, and to know that they are getting what they need.

Not at all. I am saying it alone won't make the problem go away. Donating money to any worthy cause is never bad. All power to you!

It depends. If you want to talk about professional sport, rock stars, cars, shopping, cooking, and stocks, we probably wouldn't be caught at the same table.

If you want to talk about things that matter, sooner or later we will talk about politics. I think civilized people can talk politics and still enjoy the dinner.

BTW, I admit my first post in this thread had a political tone, but I fail to see how the other post is anywhere near political. Or is it that having an opinion is automatically political?

For the record - I agree with Woodson, and as I said, all power to him and people like him. It was the 15% Canadian kids statistics that ticked me off, because, as I said, child poverty in Canada is nothing compared to REAL child poverty. So, it has nothing to do with Woodson - it has something to do with people spewing statistics based on dubious data collection methods.

This reminds me a headline in the newspaper:

70% Italians admit to having an affair!

It turned out in the article, that 40% Italian men and 30% Itallian women admitted to having an affair.

Every time I read a press release with percentages attached, I cringe.

Re: The State of the World's Children Under Threat

ooohhh look, they've opened the doors again. I understand Jerry. I can get really passionate about subjects like this because injustice is a gut wrenching deal and even more so when it's dumped upon the helpless (children) If you're anything like me I'd say you've shown incredible control here.

Re: The State of the World's Children Under Threat

Thanks. Exactly my position. It must be the 'emigrant' in me... :)

What's with the name? Where are you from?

Re: The State of the World's Children Under Threat

Jerry, I can't get into either of those questions as far as answers go or they'll turn the key on this thread again. I live in Vancouver now, and the name, well it's kind of personal and to get into it would summon the gatekeeper :) I'm glad I understood you're position though.

Re: The State of the World's Children Under Threat

Just as a note to the mod. I think you would make or are a good parent. You locked down the thread as a kind of warning, but then had the compassion to open it up again and trust. This kind of behaviour deserves respect, Thanks. FWIW

Re: The State of the World's Children Under Threat

Personally I am not a big fan of the UN, there is so much corruption and UNICEF is not all it claims to be.

My wife and the people we meet in her country (PERU) distrust UNICEF and the UN and rightfully so after they apparently permanently sterilized over 200,000 native american women there, all the while telling them it was regualr medical checkup.

There is so much corruption in all those governments and ours too, that it is the little guy who gets screwed. They tax nearly 1/2 of what we earn and cannot account for it. Huge social programs that just increase peoples dependency on the government. In America Lyndon Johnson announced his "War On Poverty" and they continually expanded the program until now we are about to face a serious financial crisis when the "Baybyboomers" retire. Will the Government be able to keeps its promises? Or will it financially collapse and default on all that it owes?

They may still have time but people will either get a cut in benefits or they will end up taxing us out the ying yang. I did see something now they are talking about disbanding the Federal Income Tax and making a 22% personal consumption tax. Businesses will be exempt from the sales tax. No more personal loopholes.

Re: The State of the World's Children Under Threat

Asking reasonable questions to make sure that the money you donate goes to the causes you’re trying to support doesn’t mean you’re political. Its naïve to think that simply donating money resolves anything. If more people had asked questions about the oil for food program maybe it would not be the scandal that it seems to be.
