The Shure BG4.1

Hey guys, I am on a low-budget but I have a Shure BG4.1. It is a condenser mic, cardioid, and in low impedance. It can be powered by a AA battery. I also have a cable that you connect to it that changes the low impedance to high impedance. Do you think this is a good microphone. I am going to test it on Monday. I'm going to use it anyway, but I would just like to see what you guys think about it?

You can find the specs on the BG4.1 and the cable on these links.

Low Impedance to High Impedance Cable

This is what I can afford. Well, I already had the microphone. I'm just borrowing it.

I have a BG 4.1 here at my studio (someone gave it to me). I think it sounds quite tinny and it has pretty bad handling noise. I only use it when I am completely out of other mics. For reference, I am comparing it to a Neumann KM84i. I think there are a lot of better mics you can get for the same price, but I guess you can't beat free :)

What do you mean when you say that it sounds quite tinny and it has pretty bad handling? Can you be more specific? Will it be able to capture the voices like in a boom? Because I mean, as long as it's better than my camcorder's mic. I don't have a DVX. I have a consumer handycam.

As far as "tinny" goes, the only other adjecetive that comes to mind is "crappy". It sounds like a cheap camcorder mic to me. It seems to overload fairly easily as well, but I think you would be ok using it for for capturing voice or foley as long as the sources aren't too loud. As far as handling noise, what I mean by that is that it picks up a lot of unwanted noise when it is handled. You would definately want a shock mount for it. I would say that it is probably only marginally better than a built-in mic, but you can get it closer, so that is probably a plus.

I went and grabbed the mic and looked it over and mine appears to be a 4.0, not 4.1 so maybe they improved it (but I wouldn't count on it)

Sweet man. Thanks tigeba. You've sure helped me a whole lot. My cables came in today so I am going to test it out. I will let you know how it works out.

Hey guys! I tested it out today. The A96F really makes this microphone sound awesoooome! It sounds so crisp and clear. You can yell and it won't distort. You can whisper and it will catch every word. This is an ok mic combined with an awesome transformer. I recommend it to everyone!

I have one problem though, it catches the sound of my dolly's PVC shifting on the pavement. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Hey guys, this microphone sounds great. But I went outside and I can hear the wind blowing on it. I can buy the wind thing for it or just make one or something. I put a sock on it and it helped. Do you guys have any suggestions on wind reducers for my microphone?
