The Shining Documentary

I've seen it many times before, but I'm just always amazed how cool the "Making Of" on The Shining DVD is. For those who havent seen it, it was a documentary shot at the time the movie itself was in production. Stanley's daughter, Vivian shot it on 16mm with an Aaton and a Nagra strapped to it. It's such a neat experience to see a making of from a movie that's nearly 30 years old that was actually shot at the same time as the movie. It's neat watching Kubrick direct and discover shots that made it into the final version. It even has commentary by Vivian, which is really neat too. Anyway, just wanted to bring some attention to a great "Making Of" doc. It's on the normal "Stanley Kubrick Collection" DVD. Anyone else know of a Making Of of an older movie that was shot at the same time as the movie?

frighteners? it's not that old, but it does have a 4 hour doc that was created at the time of production and put on the laserdisc (laser-whatey?) I enjoyed it.

4 HOURS?!!? I'm there! And news about this making its way onto a special edition DVD? Didn't Peter Jackson direct that?

yeah, its out on dvd now, thats how i saw it. There's the normal release and the 2 disc "director's cut" version. It's on that.

I just mention the laserdisc thing because every dvd now has some kind of documentary (usually not very good) and this really interesting, very comprehensive (4 hours) doc came out a decade ago. Gotta love Pete ;)

"Hearts of Darkness," which sadly is not available on DVD, is a terrific doc on the making of "Apocalypse Now," with footage shot on set by Coppola's wife, Eleanor.

Hearts of Darkness is a great doc. Full Tilt Boogie, a feature length doc about the makign of From Dusk Till Dawn is also pretty good. It's included as a bonus disc on the From Dusk Till Dawn DVD.

in the Apocalypse Now Complete Dossier edition, they have the Hearts of Darkness documentary on it, its quite good

you sure?

from dvdverdict.com:

"Due to continued rights issues, the incredible feature-length making-of documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse by Fax Bahr, George Hickenlooper, and Eleanor Coppola is not included in this set."

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Hearts of Darkness isnt on the latest disc of Appocalypse. I distinctly remember reading the back of the box in hope of seeing it listed, but no such luck. There may be a simmilar named Making Of on the disc, but it's probably just a retrospective.

Yeah, it's fun to watch him yell at Shelley Duvall. It gives away the whole "this is only a set" idea, which is hard to tell in the movie.

I love The Shining. In my opinion, its the only horror movie that makes me uncomfortable because of its truly creepy atmosphere, music, and characters.
