The "Shakiness" of Film

Someone very wise once told me,
"The best thing you can know.. is what you DON'T know."

Thing is nobody likes a know-it-all and it's really easy to tell when someone is talking out of their backside. Be willing to take time to really understand things so you can truly understand stuff. You won't regret understanding, even if you don't have an immediate use for it. It will be useful to study every single aspect of creating pictures and motion pictures; it will be useful... even if for nothing else than being able to keep up on a discussion group and say to yourself, "hey, i know what that means" It is useful. Just be aware of your limitations, don't ever think you know anything because someone always knows more, act responsible and people will definitely be willing to help you throughout your career. The finest people in the industry take time to help others because they love what they do and they want to see others to experience the same successes. Learn all you can now. You never know where that journey will take you or who you will meet or opportunities you may have along the way.

Someone else very wise once told me,
"You wanna know how to shoot film? You push record on the camera"

Sometimes the most difficult concepts are all too simple. True, you just press the button. But, you have to know how it will look before you ever touch that film camera. Keep learning. Don't give up. Taking pictures is expensive, no doubt about it. Try not to think too much about the commerce of photography--that will only make you frustrated. Think mostly about the craft and art of it all and work on those things which you can change. Craft. All the toys and widgets will come in time as you develop your skills and convince others to pay you for them. It's not an easy road, there aren't many people looking to pay for pictures. Best of luck.

Questionman, pay attention to the advise these guys are graciously providing... and stick with it bro, sounds like you've got a good drive and willingness to learn. That will get you a long way. Best of luck to you. God bless.

Once more - try postproduction, it's helpfull and flexible. For stroboscope effect e.g. Vegas + Pixelan (step time) plugin.

I don't have Vegas. I have Vegas Moviestudio which is the lower end of Vegas. So, do you have another idea? I have Adobe Premiere, does that have one. It has like a strobe effect but I don't know how it works and I don't know if it's what I want.

Hey guys, my camcorder can't change it's shutter speed to 1/250. It only goes up to like 1/30 or something. I was wondering, how I would achieve this look. How would I set my shutter speed as high as possible, because right now, it is blurry and it isn't stroby enough. Also, can you achieve this look with Adobe Premiere?

bro, quit beating the same old horse.

I know I know. It's just that I saw a sample clip in these message boards on how a kid set his shutter speed to 1/250 and it had the EXACT look I was looking for. So i know that if I set my shutter speed to 1/250 I will be able to achieve the look. But i think my camcorder only goes slow shutters. It doesn't go high ones. So I might not be able to achieve this effect with this camera. But atleast I will buy my DVX100A in a year or so (grrr...it will take sooo long to save up)

dude, it's the effing framerate, not the shutter speed you're seeing, mostly. i feel your pain.
get your hands on a camera first then let's talk about shutter speed, okay?

There is no substitute for shooting in 24p. It's what you want to do.

HOWEVER, if you upgrade to a full Vegas version, you can convert 60i to 24p, and Vegas does a damn good job of it. It will NOT be as good as if you had shot that way to begin with, but it will at least get your motion rendering mostly correct.

No no you guys don't understand. Someone on this message board posted a clip of a test he made with 1/250 shutter speed. He said it himself. And that is the look I am looking for. Let me look for the thread.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide...

The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power,
And all that beauty, all that wealth e'er gave,
Awaits alike th' inevitable hour:-
The paths of glory lead but to the grave.

-Grey's Elegy

why did you guys post those poems? They don't mean nothing to me...at least I don't understand them...lol...check out the test

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I'll simply sleep in peace until you shoot 24p.

I'll simply sleep in peace until you shoot 24p.

Hey i have a Good old trv70. I love it. its a great Deck.....

Shoot Progressive. ITs 30P. And its real 30p too. none of that screwing around deinterlace crap. The picture it takes is quite good. I use flash mode too, someitmes, turn the level all the way down, then turn it up until the first bar appears. thsi gives a filmic judder. but i still thikn it just deinterlaces to 30 anyway, so its res is less.

But! you can shoot Flash mode while engaging 16:9 mode. so it just might have more resolution than cropping Progressive down to a 16:9 and enlarging, cause (SURPRISINGLY) the 16:9 on the TRV70 is actually somewhat "native". cause the field of view becomes wider, than regular 4:3, its not just cropping the top and bottom. Also, when you shoot progressive, the FOV becomes wider. For some reason the Cam uses a smaller patch inth midddle of the CCD when shooting interlaced.

PS switch the picture mode to Sunset moon. it limits how much Gain the camera will apply. IT only puts like 6 or 9 DB of gain max in this mode, it keeps the picture relatively noise free.

incombination with 16:9 and flash, and sunset moon, yo ucan get a decent pciture with the TRV70.

I am shooting some samples, i will post Grabs ina few minutes.

Ok here they are, the first one is the TRV70 in 30P. Sunset moon Mode.

THis is 60i but with the Flash mode on. ITs clearly soft, despite being in focus. i figure it is the Deinterlacing causing it.

This is 16:9 Interlaced standard.

http://img284.echo.cx/my.php?image=trv7016by9interlacedjpg3xw.jpg

this is 16:9 with Flash mode on. notice how its kinda pixelated. and blocky looking.

I mean for a consumer cam itrs not bad. But to be persfectly honest, the Progressive looks the best. its Really quite sharp for a consumer cam. Alos i have a tendency of turning down the sharpness all the way. so that might have contributed to how soft some of them looked. But Progressive mode renders motion the best, and in combination with Sunset moon, its relatively low noise and the shutter is locked at 60 so you wont get thoes weird sudden spikes in shutterspeed if the ambient light level goes up. (i hate the Auto shutter)

Some one said before the sony progressive is 240P or something. If it is, i guess im worng, im just going by whats written about it in the manual. Sony claims and i Quote

"Recording with all the Pixels- Progressive recording mode: - The normal TV broadacast divides the screen into two finer fields, and displays them in turn, every 60th of a second, thus the image only appears to cover half the image area. Displaying the Whole image on a full screen is called displaying with all the pixels, In this function The picture is clearer, than one in normal function, but moving objects appear jerky, since the picture is read and output every 1/30 a second"

I guess the bastards lie when they call it Progressive.

oh well, good luck Question, i hope you get a DVX soon. Best money ever spent.

" I am alergic to shakey cam. Whenever I see it I wonder if the camera man is suffreing from parkinson's or masturbating at the same time."
