Hi Guys,

I recently watched the masters of horror ep. "The screwfly solution" (shot on HVX) and was kind of amazed how it was shot with what looked like to me no 35mm adapter and mostly handheld which was fairly shakey. Whilst i didn't think the episode was all that great it really shows with decent acting, good audio and a good story you can make great movies with a low budget and some decent prep. My question is how much money could you potentially save on a low budget film going fully handheld as opposed to getting a jib and a dolly or even using a steadicam?

I hope this question isn't too broad, I'd also like to hear your thoughts on how this episode was shot.

Thanks

Your question is really about the aesthetic of the show. I shoot primarily handheld, but a tripod, jib and dolly are always available if a shot dictates their use. You have to have a plan as a DP. Know what you need to accomplish and then bring or build the tools to accomplish it.

I haven't seen the episode you're talking about, but for horror, handheld is a staple.

Our 15' remote head jib, less operator goes out for three bills a day with HD monitoring and SD confidence. Doorway dollies with track can be had for about $100 a weekend.

You have to do break-downs for your show to figure your own savings, but there are a couple of figures to get you started!
