I wasn't really that excited about it when I first heard about it, but the more I see the trailer in front of movies and such, the more I think this could be a really damn fun movie.

Hey what happened to you guys. I just revelled in it, it's greeeaat stuff .. absolutely nothing in moderation is correct.

It'll remind you the first time you left home to go batching. It's a compendium of Ferris whatsisfaces Day Off, Risky Business, The Hangover 1-3,
Dumb and Dumber .. all set in Puerto Rico.

In 1962 I worked with journos at a brand new TV station north of Sydney and Rum Diary is all true.

Exactly the same thing happened with us, at the end of '62, politics killed the live productions but till then we partied 24/6 .. 7 we crashed out.

Cheers and cheers.

The Rum Diary (2011)

The Rum Diary may not be a great film, but it is definitely a political film. This Hunter S. Thompson novel unfolds on the island of Puerto Rico in 1960 where Johnny Depp playing a thinly-veiled Thompson, by the name of Paul Kemp, awakens to the realities of the American domination of that territory. Depp, a long time friend of Thompson’s, had long agreed to do the picture despite more than a decade of setbacks...

Sorry to bump the old thread.

But I just wanted to say I absolutely love this film. Depp was spot on for the lead role, I personally love the 'tension' between Depp and Amber Heard throughout the story, so well done.

I really realllly love 16mm film and the grade, I would love to know how to achieve a similar look.

I was SO excited to see this in the theater, but I left depressed. I'm a huge HST fan, and The Rum Diary is a solid, and funny book...but I felt that they missed out on so much of the humor that is in the original text. Everything just seemed so forgettable, which is a huge sin when dealing with HST. Also I know that Depp wanted to make this for Hunter, but perhaps his love for the man impacted his acting negatively. The film got so preachy towards the end, which is never was in the book. It seems like Depp was trying to make too big of a statement in regards to what HST would be. He doesn't need the Charlie Kane moment where he states his ideals here, especially considering I don't remember any of that occurring in the same fashion in the book.

I love Bruce Robinson too, I hope he gets another chance to redeem himself...The movie did look great thanks to the shooting and production design.
